Most of the focus after Day 1 was on Tiger Woods' continued struggles. His game was erratic once again before he was forced to withdraw due to injury. His presence always gives a tournament a boost, but a closely contested weekend battle should provide the entertainment value this week.
Let's check out how the leaders stack up following Round 2:
English put together an impressive blemish-free round with six birdies, three on each side, and no bogeys. At the very least, he's put himself in position to score his first victory on the PGA Tour since 2013. Holding on won't be easy with so many other contenders, though.
Jason Sobel of Golf Channel notes the American is almost a wily veteran given the number of young players making an impact these days:
Nick Watney also moved himself into prime position with a seven-under effort on Friday. Like English, he was able to navigate the north course without dropping a single shot in the second round. He knocked in four birdies on the back half, including one on the 18th to finish on a high note.
Jhonattan Vegas and Martin Laird both join Watney at eight-under par, two strokes off the pace.
Nicholas Thompson checks in one shot behind that trio followed by a massive group at six-under, which includes Jason Day, Ian Poulter and Jimmy Walker.
Day was actually one stroke over par after a rough go on the south course in the first round. The north course treated him far better as he poured in eight birdies. PGA of Australia pointed out it allowed him to jump nearly 90 spots:
