Four different players shot sparking six-under 64s to open up an initial lead in the first round, including Masters champion Jordan Spieth. In all, 25 players shot a three-under 67 or better, which set the stage for a dramatic finish over the weekend.
Here is a look at the leaderboard after Thursday's opening round.
Kevin Na seized early control of the tournament with a six-under 64 and shares the lead with Boo Weekley, Ryo Ishikawa and Spieth. Na tallied seven birdies and a single bogey on the day and demonstrated just how comfortable he is at Colonial.
He boasts four top-25 finishes in six starts at Colonial in his career but only has a single PGA Tour victory on his resume (from 2011). The good news is Thursday's round was a continuation of Na's impressive play at The Players Championship, where he shared the lead after two rounds and ultimately tied for sixth place.
The co-leader discussed his recent play, per Mike McAllister of PGATour.com: “If I keep putting myself in that position, I’m going to get some wins.”
Na will have to hold off Weekley and his red-hot putter if he hopes to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Weekley made all 12 of his putts from within 10 feet and also finished with a six-under 64. Justin Ray of the Golf Channel praised his putting:
The result was zero bogeys for Weekley on the way to a beautiful round.
Ishikawa also found his name at the top of the leaderboard with a six-under par, and he has plenty of momentum moving into Friday's round after two birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 to close Thursday. He also saved No. 17 with an impressive chip-in, as the PGA Tour passed along:
