Crowne Plaza Inv: Confidence and a Hot Putter Propel David Toms to the Lead

Toms, whose last win on tour was in 2006 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, turned a lot of heads last week with his play in Ponte Vedra, Fla. at TPC Sawgrass.
"I screwed up," says Toms on his par putt miss from three feet to force the playoff to go at least one more hole with Choi.
How a few days can affect the putter is a mystery even to touring pros.
Toms needed just 24 putts to get around the course in Ft. Worth, TX in route to shooting an opening-round 62, his best score ever at the Colonial.
His bogey-free, eight-under par was equaled only by Chez Reavie. Reavie and Toms share the lead with the likes of Rickie Folwer, Brenden de Jonge, Stewart Cink and Brian Gay lurking just a few shots behind.
Toms was asked of his confidence coming off such a bitter loss to Choi just this past Sunday, and how he managed to bring confidence to this week's tournament.
"Confidence? Yeah I guess I have some," says Toms.
"But at the same time, I still need to put four rounds together. I was able to do that somewhat last week.
"I had times back in the early 2000s where I won by a bunch. You know, play with the lead a lot of times and was able to maintain it and increase that.
"Until I’m able to do that again, I will still have that doubt. But I do feel good about my game certainly. I will just keep plugging along—maybe get one here some time soon."
Plugging along must be "Toms Speak" for playing more aggressive than he has in the past.
After hitting only 6-of-14 fairways in Round 1, Toms was dropping bombs on the greens to go as low has he did.
