Charl Schwartzel: Nothing Wrong with Masters Champ Choosing Golf over Letterman

It took roughly 12 hours for Charles Schwartzel to be second guessed.
Although not for a poor club choice from the fairway, opting to select driver instead of a three wood, or misreading a putt.
No, instead Schwartzel's decision not to appear on David Letterman--he's heading to Malaysia to play a tournament there--was called a "bad PR move" by CNBC's Darrell Rovell.
"Schwartzel is doing a couple radio interviews, but not national TV. Can't turn down Letterman, sorry."
Rovell's job is to judge the line between sports and business, so I can understand how he would view this as a bad "business decision." When it comes to endorsements and the spotlight, you strike when the fire is hot, and it doesn't get any hotter than the 24-48 hours after you win the Masters.
But just because Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Arnold Palmer and all the other iconic champions have made hawking products almost as much their legacy as winning tournaments doesn't make it the norm.
I don't know Schwartzel: maybe he's just shy and doesn't want to be on television. Practicing your life-long craft in front of millions isn't quite the same as sitting in a chair talking about yourself in front of millions. Or maybe he only cares about golf--not the ancillary elements--and isn't concerned with making endorsement dollars. Or maybe he just doesn't want to get complacent and let his game suffer while he does the news shoes, goes to Disney World, drives through Krispy Kreme Doughnuts with the Green Jacket on, etc.
Any one of those reasons is perfectly acceptable. He doesn't owe us interviews and a whirlwind press tour....especially after his four-birdie-finish just gave us an incredible piece of major championship drama that will be remembered as long as the Masters is played.
