British Open Payout 2012: How Triple Bogey Cost Tiger Woods over $1 Million

After his disastrous play in the bunker on that hole, he lost his confidence and triple bogeyed, which may have cost him the British Open title and nearly $1 million in prize money.
That sixth hole essentially took Woods out of contention. He was in the mix until his second shot landed in the bunker on the nearside of the green, buried in sand and about two feet from a four foot rise.
It was an extremely difficult shot for Tiger, and I doubt that any player in history could have made it directly onto the green.
But he tried it anyway.
Tiger gave the shot everything he had, but it hit the rise about two-and-a-half feet from the top, coming back and almost hitting him as it left him with a difficult shot on the side of the bunker.
From there Tiger would go on to examine his options and attempt a desperate shot. He crouched onto his knee along the side of the bunker as he tried to muscle the ball out of the sand and up the slope. He hit it as hard as he could from his position, and the ball took a lucky bounce off the slope and ended up on the green.
It looked like that chip may have boosted Tiger, but he came up limping as he walked over to his ball and began putting.
However, knowing that he had an incredibly long putt for bogey must have shaken him because he came up well short on the attempt, leaving him with a difficult putt for double bogey. He missed again, this time just wide of the cup, and he finished with a triple bogey.
The sixth hole had been a great one for Tiger, recording a birdie in each of the first three rounds of play. However, on Sunday it was his downfall, giving back the strokes he had shaved off in the first three rounds.
Tiger was essentially eliminated from that moment on, and the rest of his day was just average.
