While American stars have often had difficulties in international competitions—see the Ryder Cup—they have dominated at the Scottish golf site.
Since Bobby Locke of South Africa won at Troon in 1950, American golfers have reeled off six straight victories at the site, and they have the firepower to do it again. Those winners were Arnold Palmer (1962), Tom Weiskopf (1973), Tom Watson (1982), Mark Calcavecchia (1989), Justin Leonard (1997) and Todd Hamilton (2004).
Golfers such as Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler appear to give the United States a solid opportunity of making it a lucky seven in a row.
Johnson, of course, won the first major tournament of his career at June's U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. He followed that with a victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, and he is clearly playing the best golf of his career.
Despite his hot streak, Johnson has been a difficult golfer for the press to get to know. He gave guarded answers prior to his victory at Oakmont, and he continues to do the same even though he has broken through. Speaking to the media at Royal Troon, his answers were always limited to one or two sentences.
When he was asked whether he was walking taller now that he had a major title, his response was limited: "It's a good feeling, for sure."
When asked about being the favorite to win the tournament, Johnson said he was unaffected: "Honestly, I don't care (laughing). I mean, I like my chances, but I go into every tournament liking my chances."
