The American finally completed a second round of 69 in the early evening on Saturday after play was suspended on Friday and delayed again for nearly 10.5 hours on Saturday due to high winds that left the historic course unplayable.
The delays will force third-round action to Sunday and require the final round to be played on Monday, just the second time that's ever happened at the Open and the first time since 1988.
Johnson showed no ill effects from blowing a chance to win or force a playoff on the 18th green at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay back in June. His driver has been on point, and he's shown tremendous confidence in his short game, despite the tough conditions.

Jordan Spieth, who is halfway to the Grand Slam this season after winning the Masters and U.S. Open, sits five shots off the pace at five under par.
Tiger Woods, a three-time winner at the Open, missed the cut at seven-over.
It's the first time in his legendary career that he's missed the cut at consecutive majors.
David Duval, another former Open champion, birdied the 18th hole to get himself back to even par and make the cut.
It's his first made cut at a major championship since the 2010 U.S. Open.
