Whenever someone mentions this year's edition of The Open, the conversation has to start with Mickelson's fourth-round performance. He was the only golfer in the field to finish under par, shooting 66 on the final day.
Lefty began the day tied for ninth place behind Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods and others but rose above them all in the end. Take a look at this impressive stat tweeted out by ESPN's Numbers Never Lie:
"It was one of the best rounds of golf of my career...I putted amazing today and as well as I ever have," Mickelson told ESPN's Tom Rinaldi in his post-victory interview.
While some might have been surprised by his performance, the veteran golfer tallied a score of 69 in Round 1 of this tournament. His final round score is the most impressive, but Mickelson showed early on he had a legitimate chance in this tournament.
In the first round, he had four birdies and just two bogeys before shooting 74 and 72 respectively in the next two rounds. Mickelson's final round will be the most talked about, but his performance throughout The Open is just as impressive.
Ian Poulter
Poulter wasn't able to climb into the No. 1 spot in the fourth round of The Open. He did, however, raise 16 spots in one round.
This year has been much less than kind to Poulter, who has to feel good about his first top-five finish in a tournament since the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in February.
