British Open 2010: The Road Holes Get Tougher

The famous "Road Hole" at the old course at St. Andrews has been lengthened to 495 yards with the addition of a new tee box pushing it back from the 455 yards the last time the Open Championship was contested there.
Altering this hole which has not been done in over 100 years was the choice of one of golf's ruling bodies, the R&A (Royal and Ancient).
The R&A says that this will re-establish the difficulty of the second shot on this unique hole, making it more difficult to hold the approach on the green while increasing the threat posed by both the road behind the putting surface and the road bunker.
The R&A followed the advice of three-time Open Champion Henry Cotton who said, "I would make a tee just beyond the railway line on the other course. It would restore this drive to its former value."
To compensate for the new tee box and threat of the bunkers and other hazards that await the players on this famed hole, the fairway has been widened on the left side to give them a larger landing area for their tee shots.
Peter Dawson the chief executive of the R&A said: "The 17th was played at the same yardage in 1900 as it was in 2005 and this fueled our belief that the formidable challenge of this iconic hole should be returned for the Open Championship."
The new tee design was also shown to past champions Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington, both of whom gave their stamp of approval on the tee change.
"To avoid those rubbish grasses, players used three-irons and four-irons off the tee, which was not our intent," Dawson went on to say. "This change will ensure that the hole plays as it was originally intended."
