Horschel moved to the top of the leaderboard by carding an impressive 63 on Saturday and then stayed steady on Sunday as the challengers around him faltered. The win comes as sweet redemption after Horschel finished as runner-up to Chris Kirk at last week's Deutsche Bank Championship.
With 11 pars in a row to finish out his round, Horschel shot a 69. He was chased for much of the day by Ryan Palmer and Sergio Garcia, but both faltered down the stretch. Horschel finished 14 under par, two shots ahead of Bubba Watson. Watson's second-place finish moves him to third in the FedEx Cup standings and gives him a shot at an outright playoff win next week.
Throughout the leaderboard, plenty of players were fighting to make the top 30 in the FedEx Cup playoff standings and earn a berth at next week's Tour Championship. While Graham DeLaet briefly found himself in the rarefied air, a triple bogey on the 15th hole knocked him out of contention.
Rookie Hideki Matsuyama took control of his destiny with a strong finish, while Morgan Hoffmann followed up his impressive 62 on Saturday with a 63 on Sunday. That's the lowest 36-hole score of the PGA season, pushing him up 47 spots in the playoff standings and punching his ticket to East Lake.
Despite a generally strong round, Rory McIlroy came undone at the 12th hole for the second straight day. Unbelievably, the world No. 1 four-putted the par-three hole for the second straight day to drop out from among the leaders.
McIlroy finished the week at eight under par. He sits fourth in the FedEx Cup standings and can win the playoff if he delivers a victory next week in Atlanta.
