Entering the day at just two-under overall and nine strokes behind leader Matt Kuchar—the 27-year-old whose only professional win came on the Nationwide Tour—sat in 43rd place. No one was paying any attention to him.
But then he started his day with a birdie.
Then five pars, two more birdies and another par. Then, on the front nine, he tallied an absurd six more birdies and three pars to end his day with a dominant nine-under 62.

After it was all said and done, the former UCLA Bruin had not only broken the course record at Liberty National, he had jumped 40 spots into third place, just one stroke behind co-leaders Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland.

Kuchar, who won The Barclays three years ago, recovered nicely after an uneven start to his day. Coming into the third round with a two-stroke lead, he bogeyed two of his first nine holes to give way to Woodland but holed an impressive three-under on the back nine to re-take the lead.
Woodland, the former Washburn University basketball player who is looking for his second win of the month after winning the Modified Stableford scoring Reno-Tahoe Open a few weeks ago, shot a three-under 68 to move into a tie for first.
Sitting in fourth is Tiger Woods, who, after an up-and-down 69 that featured three bogeys and five birdies, looks set to bounce back from a disappointing performance at the PGA Championship this month.
Four strokes back, he will need a vintage Tiger performance on Sunday to tally another 2013 win to his resume.
