Throughout the history of professional golf, winning has always been the ticket to fame, fortune and historical significance.

Everyone knows that Bobby Jones won all four of the tournaments that were considered to be major championships in 1930.

However, can anyone name the player, aside from Jones, who had the most top-10 finishes in those four tournaments?

Didn’t think so.

Everyone knows that Tiger Woods won four consecutive majors between 2000 and 2001—a feat known today as the “Tiger Slam.” But can anyone name the player who had the best finishes at those four majors outside of Woods?

Didn’t think so.

Who had the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 1953?

Easy. Jack Nicklaus.

Umm, does anyone have a PGA Tour Media Guide handy to look up that information?

Mickelson has won 51 professional tournaments, including five majors and 42 PGA Tour events.

Els has won 19 PGA Tour titles, four majors and 67 worldwide events during his career.

Singh won three major championships, 34 PGA Tour events and 59 total events worldwide.

These players won, and they won often during their prime.

But something strange has happened with this next generation of professional golfers in that they apparently don’t need to win often, or even at all, to ascend to the upper echelons of the game...
