2011 Players Championship: Did David Toms Choice on No. 16 Cost Him the Victory?

By now we all witnessed Toms three putting the infamous 17th; the first playoff hole, to lose to K.J. Choi by one and watch his Cinderella like run at the Players come screeching to a halt.
Did Toms really lose the tournament in the playoff?
Or could a choice he had in regulation play have led to his demise?
I take you back to David Tom's second shot on the par-five 16th after he put his drive in a near perfect location just off the fairway in the first cut of rough.
Tom's was currently one shot up on Choi at 13-under par with only two holes yet to play.
The smart move seemingly to most, would have been to layup to a good yardage leaving yourself and easy wedge shot into the green which is guarded by water to the right.
Laying up and seemingly assuring yourself a par, maybe even a birdie, and would put all the pressure on Choi to try and go for the green in two to go for a birdie to tie you.
Toms, for whatever reason with a one shot lead decided to go for the green in two.
The results saw him hit a hybrid club pretty thin and maybe a little on the toe to come splashing down into the water hazard to the right of the green.
Choi, who out drove Toms and playing second, now had the green light to layup after seeing Tom's ball dunk into the hazard almost guaranteeing him a par and a tie for the lead with two holes to play.
Choi made his par on No. 16 and proceeds to birdie 17 to take a one shot lead over Toms heading towards the 18th tee.
Here's where it became interesting to me.
If; and that a big if, and I know hindsight is 20/20 of course, but if Toms lays up on 16 instead of going for the green in two.
