2011 British Open: Phil Mickelson Knows Changes Are Needed to Win in England

Widely known to many as the best short game player on Tour, Mickelson is still trying to find the right combination in his game to contend in a British Open Championship.
Though "Lefty" did finish third in 2004, that is the only top-10 finish in a British Open for the California native in 17 tries across the pond.
His best finish other than that was in 2000 when he finished in a tie for 11th.
Not a very good track record for someone with the golf game of Phil Mickelson and 47 career wins .
So what is it with Mickelson and the British Open?
No one can really put their finger on one thing that he does bad or wrong on foreign soil.
In an interview to the Associated Press on Wednesday, Mickelson himself offered some explanation on his struggles in past British Opens.
“The biggest reason is the greens,” the sixth-ranked Mickelson said. “I have not putted well. The grass is a little bit more coarse, a little thicker, has a little bit more effect, and you need to putt with less break and more aggression is what I’ve come to find.
“I’m going to try to do that this week and next week and see if that doesn’t combat some of the issues that I’ve had putting here.”
To try and remedy his putting woes in British Opens, Mickelson is playing in the Scottish Open as a primer to what's to come at Royal St. George's next week.
Those of us who follow golf and Mickelson in particular will notice that it is not just his putting that causes him grief in British Opens.
Though that is a major factor in his shortcomings on foreign soil.
