2010 US Open Golf: And the US Open Winner Is…Pebble Beach

Thursday the Lakers won one of the ugliest Finals ever, on Friday the U.S. soccer team stunk up the joint for a half, roared back to tie the game and then had the winning goal called back on one of the worst calls ever, and then the U.S. Open golf tournament concluded on a Sunday where no one in the field seemed to want to win the darn thing.
I know it was windy, I know the greens were brutal. But third day leader Dustin Johnson came apart completely, and neither Tiger nor Lefty ever made a real charge.
The only question near the end was whether Graeme McDowell was capable of choking away his lead on the back nine as quickly as Johnson did on the front nine.
The only player who really showed a spine throughout the day was Gregory Havret, who played a steady round and hung around par. Fans didn't really know this for much of the day as both the ESPN radio and NBC television broadcast teams ignored Havret throughout the day.
Havret, a Frenchman, was playing his first PGA Tournament this year. He was even more unknown to American audiences than eventual winner McDowell.
So what did we learn this weekend? Well, we learned Pebble Beach in June is a very tough course.
We also learned that after two years of American wins, the U.S. national championship is once again in the hands of a golfer from somewhere else in the world.
And we learned that Tiger still has some game, but isn't the fearsome force that he once was just a year ago.
