2010 British Open: Louis Oosthuizen Emerges as Surprise Leader in Round Two

Fresh off the rousing success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African nation to ever host the event, South Africa is once again making headlines, this time at the British Open at St. Andrews.
After much of the media attention was going to young sensation Rory McIlroy's opening round of 63, lost in between the headlines was South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen (pronounced Wes thu izen).
Oosthuizen opened his British Open with a very nice seven-under 65, which was good enough to find himself alone in second place behind the 21-year-old phenom McIlroy.
The 27-year-old Oosthuizen is a big surprise at the top of the leaderboard, especially at a major championship, after he missed the cut at the Masters and the U.S. Open already this year.
He was at the Scottish Open last week as a tune up for the British Open, but again failed to make it to the weekend there as well.
Now, it looks as though he will definitely make the cut at the British Open and may figure prominently this weekend.
"It was really a matter of getting my confidence up," said Oosthuizen. "It's just a great golf course. I love it."
Oosthuizen has had some success on the European Tour this season, having already picked up a win at the Open de Andalucia de Golf in March, and has added two top 10s as well.
Which brings us back to the British Open.
His first round score of 65 was even more impressive to some, as he accomplished that in the tougher afternoon conditions at St. Andrews, when the skies opened and the wind was howling at the Old Course.
Oosthuizen had a wild ride during his round as most that teed off in the afternoon did. Starting out in his rain gear, he played the front nine going out in 31 with five birdies on the side, including four in a row from No. 7 through No. 10.
