Wolfgang Von Trips: The Original German Formula 1 Master

His career statistics don't make overly impressive reading. He only scored 56 points and earned just two race victories. But what everyone agrees on is that he could of been a multi-time world drivers champion. This is a man whose statistics hide the ability he had.
His Formula 1 career technically started in 1956 when he entered the Italian Grand Prix. After crashing during practice, Von Trips was injured and was unable to take the grid.
Wolfgang made his full debut at the 1957 Argentinian Grand Prix, where he shared a drive with Peter Collins and Cesare Perdisa. The three of the managed to get their machine to finish the race in sixth but were ineligible for points. Von Trips competed in two more races in 1957, retiring in Monaco and finishing third at Monza.
Wolfgang drove in a few races in 1958, the highlight being a third place at the French Grand Prix. In the other races he competed, he either finished in the top 5 or didn't get to the finish full stop. Twice he didn't finish due to mechanical problems, and the other time at Monza he crashed out at the start, injuring himself like he did in 1956.
1959 was an incredibly quiet year with Wolfgang only entering three races. He failed to finish at Monaco, failed to qualify in Germany and finished sixth in the USA. The reason behind Wolfgang being so quiet was the Enzo was annoyed with the German for crashing so many of his cars. Enzo said he could only drive Ferrari cars when he calmed down a bit.
In 1960, he drove the whole season (except the Indy 500) and showed supreme consistency. He finished fourth at Portugal, fifth three times at Argentina, Holland and Italy and sixth in Britain. He would of got another finish around that area in Belgium but his transmission failed.
