The race was finally brought to a halt for the second and last time on Lap 44 after the Frenchman’s car had aquaplaned off the track and collided with a vehicle that was trying to remove Adrian Sutil’s Sauber after the German had also spun off on the previous lap.

All of which meant that with now just four grands prix left this season, the championship leader was able to further extend his advantage over team-mate Nico Rosberg at the top of the drivers’ standings to 10 points after the pole-sitter was only able to finish in second.
Elsewhere, world champion Sebastian Vettel grabbed the final podium position ahead of Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, while McLaren's Jenson Button was fifth and the Williams duo of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa in sixth and seventh places respectively, with Nico Hulkenberg, Jean-Eric Vergne and Sergio Perez completing the top 10.
