Indian GP Update: Overtaking Could Go To a Whole New Level

FIA race director Charlie Whiting visited the track recently along with Federation of Motorsports Clubs of India president Vicky Chandhok, and was pleased to observe the amount of progress that has been made on the site.
The granular hard core layer of the surface has already been laid, whereas run-off areas for corners and service roads for fans entering the circuit are nearing completion. The laying of the tarmac should commence on March 15.
Whiting also suggested some changes for the track which would make it unique and exciting. Tighter apexes at corners could find their way to the Indian GP, which will increase overtaking opportunities.
Following a tighter apex (which is the geometric centre of a turn) allows the driver to maintain a straight line at the highest speed while manoeuvring a turn, thus encouraging overtaking. Three of the 16 corners of the circuit are expected to have this feature—a first in the world.
With the introduction of adjustable rear wings and the reintroduction of KERS—which also promote overtaking—the Indian GP sure promises to take the art to a whole new level, which is only fair in a country that is obsessed with it.
Whiting's final inspection of the track is due to take place on June 30, with the race scheduled for Oct. 30.
