Even the legendary Michael Schumacher, who made a dramatic comeback for newly revived Mercedes GP team after Daimler took over last year’s winners Brawn GP, ensured that the grid had four World Champions starting the races.
Schumacher did not set the world on fire, but he was coming back after three years off and Mercedes just did not have the car that could challenge for podium places on a regular basis, let alone win. But Schumacher's teammate, the young German Nico Rosberg, proved that he had enough talent in him, and with a right car, could be a title contender.
Also Renault, who ended 2009 in a disaster, made a good comeback with Robert Kubica putting in some stellar performances. With an equal in teammate, Renault could have even challenged the Mercedes GP team.
The season saw three rookie teams making its debut. The Malaysian outfit brought back the Lotus name, which is now in all sorts of controversy. The season also saw quite a bit of rookie drivers, with the most impressive being Kamui Kobayashi and Nico Hulkenberg. Though Kobayashi did make his debut last year, this year was his first full season in F1, which would make him a rookie.
Also, F1 saw Russia’s first driver in Vitaly Petrov, who had a roller coaster of a season. But in the end, Petrov had a great final race in which he actually played a part in Vettel easily winning the title.
