It meant Ricciardo's victory came under the safety car, but that will have mattered little to the Australian, who has done an outstanding job since joining Red Bull this season.
Behind the top three, there was no shortage of drama, either: a scintillating late run from Jenson Button saw him grab fourth place for McLaren, leapfrogging Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso in the process.
Valtteri Bottas, Jean-Eric Vergne, Kevin Magnussen and Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the top 10.
It may have come from Mercedes' technical issues, but the Canadian Grand Prix was a shot in the arm for F1 after a one-sided season. There were several feasible candidates to win the race in the final laps, and some imperious drives from the sport's leading names.
But Ricciardo's day in the Montreal sun was thoroughly deserved, starting from sixth place and, as he has done all season, using nous and extracting power from his car to achieve a remarkable result.
