The German controlled the race from early in the race to the finish, benefitting from team-mate and pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton's early retirement after power problems. His 25-second lead was rarely challenged.
Behind Rosberg, Daniel Ricciardo delighted the home crowd with second place in his first race for Red Bull, while Kevin Magnussen in his debut Grand Prix took McLaren's first podium finish since the 2012 season.
Just outside the top three were former world champions Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, while Williams' Valtteri Bottas drove a barnstorming race that saw him yo-yo up and down the standings until finally finishing sixth.
Rounding out the points finishers were the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg, Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, and then the Toro Rosso pair of Daniil Kvyat—also on his debut and aged just 19—and Jean-Eric Vergne.
The race got off to a chaotic start, with Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel's cars giving up on them in the opening laps.
Felipe Massa and Kamui Kobayashi were also involved in a first-lap incident which took out both drivers. The Japanese admitted culpability during the television coverage, and can expect punishment after the race.
All in all 14 drivers finished the race—not quite the horror show of retirements that many predicted—but will certainly leave most teams with plenty to think about going into the next race in Malaysia in two weeks' time.
