Andy Murray won the 2016 China Open final after a 6-4, 7-6 (2) straight-sets win over Grigor Dimitrov in Sunday’s final in Beijing. Murray won, but only after being taken to a tiebreak in the second, thanks to some stunning shots from Dimitrov on the brink of defeat. The win moves Murray closer to his aim of supplanting Novak Djokovic as the top-ranked men’s player in the world. An early break of serve helped Murray steal a one-game lead in the opening set. The Scot appeared in firm control until Dimitrov battled back to trail 3-2. Dimitrov then squandered a great chance...

Andy Murray has spent a decade chasing after three of the biggest legends in tennis history. They were the exclusive triumvirate, winning gluts of Grand Slam titles and keeping special guard over their rights to the No. 1 ranking. Ten years ago, young Murray and everyone else in the world outside of Mallorca was in awe of Roger Federer’s explosive all-courts game, his fluid forehand and attacking style. Murray was never going to develop these offensive gifts and go on to 17 major titles. Then it was Rafael Nadal’s turn to hammer the tour into submission with heavy topspin, defensive...

The milestones are quickly piling up for 19-year-old phenom Alexander Zverev. Considered a future Grand Slam contender and potential world No. 1, Zverev has fueled that hype this fall with a recent string of superb results. He’s growing in confidence with every passing match, harnessing his gifts and emerging as tennis’ next star in the making. The youngest player to crack the Top 25 since Novak Djokovic did so in 2006, the world No. 24 should soon find himself even higher in the rankings—especially if his coming-of-age moment in St. Petersburg is a harbinger for what lies ahead. In...

The Spaniard soared into an early lead in Beijing before Mannarino staged a comeback attempt in the second set, but it proved futile, as Nadal finished strong to seal his spot opposite Dimitrov in the next round. Earlier in the day, world No. 1 Angelique Kerber fell out of the 2016 China Open after losing 6-3, 7-5 to Elina Svitolina. The German was a break up in both sets, although her opponent,...

Serena Williams may have her sights set on breaking the all-time record for most Grand Slam titles. However, her plans to kick off 2017 hint at a desire to reclaim the WTA Tour’s No. 1 ranking, too. After a record-tying 186 consecutive weeks at No. 1, Williams relinquished the top spot to Angelique Kerber at the U.S. Open. Then Williams took the post-U.S. Open Asian swing off for the second year in a row, giving Kerber a chance to pad her points lead. Although Williams is scheduled to compete in the WTA’s year-end championship in Singapore, her start to 2017 at the ASB Classic...
