The U.S. Open begins next week, and when players take the court in New York, they will be fighting for superiority in the final major of the calendar year. The majors have belonged to the triumvirate of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray for the majority of the last several seasons. While Djokovic and Murray are again at the top of the favorite lists—Federer is out as he recovers from knee surgery—one gets the feeling that a surprise challenger could emerge this time around. Djokovic lost at Wimbledon last month, and he also struggled in this year’s Olympic tournament....

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has a sizable lead over Andy Murray in the ATP rankings. He is poised to defend his U.S. Open title and finish the year with another flourish. He’s been one of the most dominant champions in history at a time when many contenders are battling hard to join the elite superstars. Superlatives on the 29-year-old Serb are often inadequate. He’s a dynamic defender, keen ball striker and savvy competitor, the superstar tennis guru Nick Bollettieri called “the game’s most complete player, ever,” as headlined in the The New York Times, and that was...

No. 2 seed Roberto Bautista Agut and American Sam Querrey were each put on the ropes in three-set nail-biters, continuing a trend that started yesterday with Richard Gasquet. Bautista Agut dropped the first set to Aljaz Bedene before coming back for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win. The Spaniard had lost twice previously to the unseeded Bedene last year. “I lost against Bedene two times, and I knew it was a difficult match today,” Bautista...

Angelique Kerber came within one match of ending Serena Williams‘ streak of 183 consecutive weeks at No. 1. It may have been Kerber’s best chance to overtake Williams this season. The U.S. Open could be the last chance.  Karolina Pliskova defeated Kerber 6-3, 6-1 to win the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Sunday. The loss leaves Kerber 190 points behind Williams, who withdrew from the tournament, citing a shoulder injury. Williams leads Kerber by 480 points in this year’s points race.  Whether Kerber choked, was too tired or simply outplayed is irrelevant...

This year’s U.S. Open kicks off Aug. 29th, and it’s going to bring a series of compelling storylines and perhaps more mystery as to who will eventually hoist the shining silver trophy than in many years past. It’s worth taking a closer look at the players who are likely to play on as the field dwindles.  The world’s No. 1 player, Novak Djokovic, is coming off a disheartening first-round loss in Olympic play to Juan Martin del Potro.
