The 2016 U.S. Open is the last tennis major of the year, and the men’s tour has several top-10 contenders with their eyes on New York’s big silver trophy. There’s defending champion Novak Djokovic looking to reassert his dominance, while Andy Murray tries to finish with two consecutive major titles and challenge for the No. 1 ranking. Otherwise, at least eight other stars have a realistic shot at winning the title if they rise up and play some of the best tennis of their careers. They also need timely upsets in their portion of the draw. Here, we rank the players according to...

The WTA Tour finally has what it’s lacked for much of the last three years: a serious tussle for the No. 1 ranking going into a Grand Slam. Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber, Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska all have a chance to emerge from the 2016 U.S. Open with the No. 1 ranking. Realistically, it’s more of a three-woman race between Williams, Kerber and Muguruza. Kerber has a 460-point edge over Williams because she has so few points to defend. Williams must reach the semifinals and hope Kerber loses before then. Kerber could lose in the first round...

The 2016 Winston-Salem Open has been filled with upsets, a trend that continued in Thursday’s quarterfinal matches. Inconsistent over his first two matches, top-seeded Richard Gasquet finally met his match in John Millman. The unseeded Australian recorded eight aces and broke Gasquet five times on his way to a 7-5, 6-3 upset. Neither player was especially strong on his serve, with both putting less than 60 percent of their first serves in play; Gasquet won just 52 percent of his service points for the match. “It was tough out there,” Millman said, per John Delong of the...

The U.S. Open is the final major tournament on the tennis calendar every year, coming just after Wimbledon. The event is normally the province of the best tennis players in the world, and there’s a good chance that Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray will reign supreme in the New York tournament this season when it starts Monday. However, fans will not get a chance to see Roger Federer compete for the title as he recovers from knee surgery. While Djokovic is the even-money favorite to win the tournament, and Murray is fairly close behind at +180 (bet $100 to win $180), according to Odds Shark,...

Serbian tennis star Ana Ivanovic is nearly ready, according to her Twitter account: However, Djokovic will have his work cut out with Andy Murray, who is fresh from picking up gold in the men’s...

It’s a year of change for the U.S. Open, the last Grand Slam on the tennis calendar. A sparkling $150 million retractable roof now adorns Arthur Ashe Stadium, adding an extra dose of panache to this glitzy event. And that’s not all. The newly built Grandstand Stadium boasts beautiful contours and an intimate environment that seats up to 8,125 fans. Beyond those renovations, there’s also a shake-up with who’ll be there this year. Notable players on the sideline include Maria Sharapova (suspension), Victoria Azarenka (pregnancy), Tomas Berdych (appendicitis) and reigning...

The third round of the 2016 Winston-Salem Open got underway Wednesday, as the field attempted to round itself into shape in the final tuneup for the U.S. Open. After looking vulnerable in his second-round match, top-seeded Richard Gasquet was strong in his defeat of countryman Stephane Robert. Third-seeded Pablo Cuevas and fourth-seeded Steve Johnson weren’t so lucky, though, as both bowed out in straight-set losses. Gasquet barely broke a sweat in his 6-1, 6-3 win over Robert. The Frenchman broke Robert five times, saved seven times when facing a break and won 64 percent...

The 2016 U.S. Open doesn’t officially begin until August 29, but a group of players looking to make their mark on New York took to the courts on Wednesday for Day 2 of the qualifying matches. These are not the players who will generate a lot of buzz when the draw is announced on Friday, but many of them will be taking part in the biggest tournament of their lives by making it through the qualifiers. Who knows, one of the names on the list of winners Thursday could end up being the next Jan Kodes, who defeated No. 1 seed John Newcombe in the first round 45 years ago. Here...

Even before the first match at the U.S. Open begins, there will be plenty of drama during the draw for each bracket. The first round kicks off from Queens, New York, on Monday, Aug. 29, but we will know the path for each player three days earlier. Fans and analysts will likely use this time to dream about potential matchups in every round, hoping the players come through to complete those scenarios. With so much separation at the top in both the men’s and women’s draws, there will also be plenty of players hoping to avoid big names until the later rounds. There won’t be any action,...
