The 2016 U.S. Open rolled on Thursday with more second-round action in both the men’s and women’s draws at the season’s final Grand Slam event. Serena Williams, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Simona Halep were among the notable players on the Day 4 slate. Rain delayed the action on the outer courts at the beginning of the day before finally clearing up shortly after noon local time in Queens, New York. Another delay followed later in the afternoon. The Weather Channel forecast suggests it shouldn’t be a consistent problem over the next couple of weeks, though. Let’s...

Andy Murray got a challenge early from Marcel Granollers in the second round of the 2016 U.S. Open, but the No. 2 seed prevailed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4. This summer has largely been Murray’s playground on the tennis court. He did have a stumble against Marin Cilic in the Western & Southern Open final on August 21, but that came after he won his second career Wimbledon title and a second straight Olympic gold medal. Even though Murray only has one grand-slam victory this season, he’s been money in the big tournaments so far, per ESPN Stats & Info: At...

Those two matches headline the fourth day of competition at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, New York. While the scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to subside by Thursday afternoon in New York City, one might find dark clouds forming under the roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium when the glowering, brilliant Andy Murray takes to the court to headline the early draw of Day 4 at the 2016 U.S. Open. Murray made quick-and-easy work of Lukas Rosol in the first round, establishing himself as the man to beat in this tournament with the likes of Novak Djokovic ailing, Roger Federer out with injury and Milos Raonic eliminated (though keep a close eye on a resurgent Rafael Nadal). The Scot is coming...

Rafael Nadal continued to cruise at the 2016 U.S. Open, defeating Andreas Seppi in the second round by a score of 6-0, 7-5, 6-1. It was a quick start and a strong finish for the Spanish star, who had some problems with his serve but was deadly receiving the ball. He only landed 56 percent of his first serves in play and faced plenty of close games throughout the match, but he countered with eight breaks and an impressive 57 percent receiving points won. There was also history in the match as slight rain forced a roof closure: The brand-new retractable roof closed in under seven minutes, providing...

After all these years, Serena Williams, 34, remains the standard-bearer for American tennis and the county’s leading Grand Slam contender. Aiming for a historic 23rd major victory as she tries to hang on to the No. 1 ranking, Williams raced out of the gate in the first round, getting one step closer to claiming a seventh U.S. Open crown. That shoulder injury she’s been nursing the last few months? It seems to be healing at exactly the right time. While she’s the best (and perhaps sole) home threat to win the title, others are capable of powering through for a deep run. Which other...

The second round of the 2016 U.S. Open got underway Wednesday in Flushing Meadows, New York, with Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Angelique Kerber spearheading the marquee. All three top seeds were coming off strong performances in their opening matches, as we’ve yet to see a truly marquee upset through the first two days. No top-10 player was ousted in the first round on either side, and there were a total of just two top 16 seeds overall to take the plunge. Each of the top 17 women made it through the first round unscathed. That said, the margin for error shrinks exponentially starting...

Two top Spanish players will take center stage on Wednesday’s night draw at the 2016 U.S. Open. No. 3 seed Garbine Muguruza is first up at Arthur Ashe Stadium’s evening slate, taking on Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova. The 22-year-old Muguruza established herself as a rising star in tennis with her win over Serena Williams at the French Open this year. She is one of the top threats to win at the U.S. Open, but she can’t get too far ahead of herself. Muguruza is yet to make it past the second round at the U.S. Open, so even though it’s early in the tournament, a...
