This week’s announcements of the squads preparing to participate in the 2015 Six Nations means the tournament lies only a fortnight away. Each team possesses strengths and weaknesses. Some boast more power up front, while others will be leaning heavily on the guile of their backs to bring about success. Examining the selections, we’ve gone about ranking the packs heading into this year’s competition, taking into account the quality of each side’s stars, depth and experience as some of the more decisive factors. Even then, a strong pack alone isn’t enough to win titles,...

Each and every year, we see a host of in-form Six Nations stars live up to our expectations and disappoint in equal measure, but it’s always those more unassuming stars who surprise us most. With a particular focus on the younger, less experienced talent, we’ve picked out a sample of names to keep an eye on throughout this year’s tournament. The list isn’t exclusive to up-and-coming players, however, as others will be worth paying extra attention to for very different reasons. One thing for sure is all the players discussed have a big opening to cause impact in the 2015...

Danny Cipriani and Nick Easter have been recalled by England for the Six Nations opener against Wales, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) has confirmed after announcing the training squad. Head coach Stuart Lancaster is without the injured Ben Morgan and Ben Foden for the tournament, with Chris Robshaw captain. Sale fly-half Cipriani has not started a game for England at No.10 since 2008, per Alex Spink of the Mirror, but he did feature on last summer’s tour of New Zealand. He has scored 144 points for Sale this season, per the club’s official website, and Mick Cleary of The...

England’s hopes for the 2015 RBS Six Nations Championship have been dealt a blow after Manu Tuilagi confirmed his recovery from a groin injury has been much slower than anticipated. According to Oliver Brown of The Telegraph, Tuilagi isn’t sure when he will return. “With this you just have to take it day by day before you try to come back. … When it first happened, even the doctor said it would be six to eight weeks,” he said. When asked about a late-February comeback, Tuilagi added: That would be ideal, but I have to get this right. It’s not like a sprained...

The shootout in Europe is upon us. This week’s top clubs on the continent jostled for position in their Champions Cup pools before the final round of matches next week to decided the eight quarter-finalists. And it left us with some mouthwatering prospects to enjoy. Toulon are the only team guaranteed a place in the knockout stages, with every other group needing a final day showdown to settle the order of things. Wasps went to Harlequins and stunned the Stoop with a smash-and-grab win, Bath stormed Stade Ernest-Wallon to catapult themselves into contention and Leicester have not given up...

Wales coach Warren Gatland has included four uncapped players in his 34-man squad for the upcoming Six Nations, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has confirmed. Fly-half Gareth Anscombe, hooker Kristian Dacey, prop Rob Evans and centre Tyler Morgan have been selected for the tournament. There are also places for Scott Andrews and Gareth Davies, who missed the Autumn Internationals. But James Hook and Adam Jones are among the players to have been left out. Hook has been overlooked in favour of the Cardiff Blues’ Anscombe. The four uncapped players have been welcomed into the squad on Twitter by...

Big upsets and even bigger scorelines were the theme of this weekend’s European schedule, where the penultimate round of fixtures was the main focus. There was disappointment for a number of Irish teams in recent days, but perhaps none more so than Munster, who have had to contend with the rare occurrence of early departure from continental competition. And a bad week for Irish rugby was made even worse when considering the profile of a star who is now making more concrete comments regarding potential retirement in 2015. There were positives to consider, however, as certain sides from England...

The European Champions Cup is back. This week’s team of the weekend has been shaped by the men who did most to ensure their teams are still in the hunt for a last-eight place when the final-pool round commences next week. That means a decent helping of players from the teams who secured impressive away wins as well as those who got on the scoresheet and shone with eye-catching displays. There was also the extra motivation of international selection. Squads for the Six Nations are named next week, and several England players in particular ensured their coaches got to see the sort of form they...

Social media has opened the way for sports men and women to divulge opinions, images and sometimes idiotic utterances that would hitherto never have come to light. Whether this has enriched the lives of those who follow their sports is a question probably best left to a group of Ph.D. students. The fact is Twitter is here, and rugby players are on it. Some of them and the people who cover the sport even have some rather interesting and amusing things to say or show us using the medium. Here are 10 worth following in 2015.
