Bath Rugby and Saracens will square off at Twickenham for the right to be crowned 2015 Premiership champions. Both sides progressed after winning contrasting, but equally engrossing semi-finals. Bath were magnificent against Leicester Tigers in a 47-10 victory, cementing their spot in the showpiece for the first time in 11 years. By contrast, Saracens were made to work much harder for their victory, eventually edging out Northampton Saints 29-24. The home of rugby always provides a spectacular backdrop to this unique occasion and there will be a host of players keen to make a big impression with...

Super Rugby’s Week 16 brings the battle for the top spot in two of the three conferences into sharp focus. While the Hurricanes have the New Zealand section sewn up, it is nip and tuck in Australia and South Africa. The Waratahs and Brumbies are separated by just two points in the Aussie conference, while in South Africa, the Stormers lead the way by the same margin over the Lions. It sets up this weekend’s action nicely, with both Australian contenders playing South African opponents. In the Waratahs‘ case, they face the Lions, who will look to use home advantage to get one over...

Wasps added to their growing list of elite-level players this week after BBC Sport announced the Premiership club had signed Australia legend George Smith. Smith, capped 111 times for the Wallabies, will turn 35 this July and has a chance to make Michael Cheika’s Rugby World Cup squad following a change in the national team’s policy on overseas players. It speaks volumes of the flanker’s evergreen ability that even in his older age the former Brumbies star can contribute at the top, but age is just a number to some. In recognition of Smith’s impending arrival at the Ricoh...

The Aviva Premiership final will be a clash of styles after Bath and Saracens won their semi-finals to reach the Twickenham showpiece next weekend. Bath swaggered past Leicester in a seven-try romp that had their free-wheeling stamp all over it. Saracens’ scrapping signature was equally as evident in their 29-24 win over Northampton to give themselves a chance of shackling Mike Ford’s men and reclaiming the title they last won in 2011. In the Pro 12, Glasgow overcame Ulster, while Munster saw off the Ospreys. The two will travel to Belfast for the final. In France, the league programme...

England rugby union coach Stuart Lancaster has confirmed that France-based stars Steffon Armitage of Toulon and Nick Abendanon of Clermont Auvergne will not feature for England at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. This was after declining to exercise the “exceptional circumstances” clause: an add-on to England’s policy of not selecting those playing club rugby overseas. England, in deciding not to pick either 2014 European Rugby Player of the Year Armitage, or the 2015 winner of the same award, Abendanon, have made a conclusive statement that no matter how good their form and England’s...

The big guns of European rugby saw their campaigns tick further into the post-season this past weekend as the Premiership and Pro12 each decided which outfits will compete for this year’s crowns. The Top 14’s normal season also came to a close as the play-off combatants were decided, along with those teams who weren’t fortunate enough to secure their top-flight survival. Away from the domestic scene, Gloucester took a huge step forward in sealing their Champions Cup future, while England coach Stuart Lancaster handed out international lifelines to a host of his potential stars. England’s heroes took prime placement in the rugby spotlight this weekend as the Premiership’s post-season calendar kicked off north of the equator. Gloucester built on their recent success with a win over Connacht to book their spot in the Champions Cup play-off final, and Saracens battled their way to a Premiership play-off final against Bath. As per usual, though, the titans of Super Rugby impressed enough to account for some of our best XV, and the Top 14 normal campaign came to a finish with some standing out as worthy of recognition more so than others. A high-five is the simplest celebration in sports, but it looks like these two rugby players need to work on the basics of slapping hands. All Blade Thomson’s Hurricanes teammate wanted to do was congratulate him on a job well-done. He never intended to have Thomson whack himself in the face. Maybe next time. Bath will play Saracens in the Aviva Premiership final next weekend after two contrasting semi-finals. Mike Ford’s men stuck over 40 points on Leicester Tigers for the second time this season at the Rec in a 47-10 win, while Saracens stormed the home fortress of last year’s champions Northampton to beat the Saints 29-24 and book a return to Twickenham. The manner of these results points to a clash of styles when these two go head-to-head in the final, with Bath’s razor sharp attack against the obdurate, hard-nosed qualities of this Saracens team that has been to the...

Week 15 in Super Rugby sees last year’s finalists go head-to-head in Sydney as the jockeying for play–off places continues. While the Waratahs and Crusaders do battle, across the Tasman, one man might have to swap the microphone for the engine room of the Chiefs’ scrum. In South Africa, the Stormers hope a returning Sevens star can sprinkle some of his try-scoring stardust on their campaign, while two more of the tournament’s most devastating wide men run out to show the nations craving their allegiance just how valuable they are. In a week in which England re-affirmed their...
