Northern hemisphere fans look away now. It may be rugby heresy to admit it, but deep down, most neutrals would have opted for a clash between New Zealand and South Africa to provide the denouement to the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The draw will not permit it should they both, as expected, win their pools and make it through their quarter-finals to meet in the last four. But recent evidence suggests, had they been kept apart until the final, it would be our best chance of not being bored to tears. World Cup finals have not often provided much bang for the buck when it comes to entertainment. 1987...

A tense week of waiting lies ahead for Bledisloe Cup opponents Australia and New Zealand, who will clash in Sydney on August 8, with the victor wrapping up this year’s crown in climactic fashion. That encounter undoubtedly stands to be tournament’s must-see matchup, but there’s also pressure on South Africa and Argentina to perform well in Durban as they close their competitions. After the Rugby Championship’s first two rounds, fans are still waiting on certain flag-bearers to produce their finest, while the results at stake point out certain team leaders to dazzle in Week...

The second round of the 2015 Rugby Championship is history, and it threw up a classic in Johannesburg and a one-sided affair in Mendoza. The tournament is very much being used as a trial for players to prove themselves worthy of a place in their countries’ World Cup squads later this year, so individual performances are being scrutinised in all four camps. Which means errors or plain poor performances could prove extra costly. B/R’s Tom Sunderland has already run the rule over the best XV of the round, but there were equally as many men who didn’t cover themselves in glory. Read...

A new-look Australia kicked off their 2015 Rugby Championship campaign with a 24-20 victory over South Africa on Sunday, with Tevita Kuridrani scoring in the 81st minute to clinch a massive result for Michael Cheika’s men. Tries from Eben Etzebeth and Jesse Kriel either side of the half-time whistle put the Springboks ahead, but Adam Ashley-Cooper and Michael Hooper went over to give the hosts hope before Kuridrani sealed the result. Ultimate Rugby confirmed the last-minute win: Two teams welcoming many new faces into their ranks were always going to make for a tetchy encounter,...

Australia stole a last-gasp victory against South Africa with a 24-20 win to kick off their Rugby Championship campaign. The Wallabies had a try in injury time by Tevita Kuridrani to thank for this win after coming back from 20-10 down to a superior South African side. The Springboks bossed possession and territory in the first half and capitalised on some poor defending early in the second to make it look as though they would be recording an away win. But Australia redoubled their efforts to stand their ground in the set piece and worked hard to find a way through a resolute Springbok rearguard. Let’s...

Richie McCaw, Ma’a Nonu, Charles Piutau, Kieran Read and Codie Taylor all scored for the Kiwis, with 14 points coming from the boot of Dan Carter, while Agustin Creevy responded...

New Zealand overcame a slow start on Friday to defeat Argentina 39-18 and get the ball rolling in their Rugby Championship title defence with a morale-boosting victory. The Pumas made a stubborn start in Christchurch, but Steve Hansen’s side scored through Ma’a Nonu just before the break to open up a considerable lead over their guests, capitalising in the second half. Richie McCaw opened the scoring against the Pumas in what seemed fate-like circumstances, as he was making his final New Zealand appearance in front of a home crowd. The Test legend sits as one of the biggest winners...

The Rugby Championship swings into action this weekend with the eye-catching tie of the round between Australia and South Africa. The Springboks have had to shuffle their deck as they cope with a string of injury concerns, while Australia’s Michael Cheika has a number of combinations to test in the next three matches before settling on his choices for the crunch matches of the Wallabies’ World Cup pool against England and Wales. The 2015 Rugby Championship kicks off on Friday with defending champions New Zealand welcoming Argentina to AMI Stadium in Christchurch. With the Rugby World Cup taking place later this year, the Rugby Championship has been shortened to a single round of fixtures, as opposed to each Southern Hemisphere giant playing one another in home-and-away legs. In a battle against the odds, Daniel Hourcade’s South American visitors are hoping to claim their first-ever win against the All Blacks on Friday, having suffered defeat in each of their previous 18 attempts. It’s a tall order, but the...
