The World Cup was back in action with two games on Thursday that saw two sides take major steps towards the quarter-finals. Wales overcame a short turnaround time between games to record a 23-13 win over Fiji, who never made life easy for Warren Gatland’s men. And France saw off the brave challenge of Canada with a bonus-point 41-18 win in Milton Keynes. Both sides move to three wins of three, but both have huge clashes left in their pool sections to decide their fates. France will face Ireland in Cardiff in what will be the pool decider if the Irish overcome Italy on Sunday, and Wales await...

Warren Gatland’s Wales have taken a decisive lead in the Rugby World Cup 2015 Pool of Death after they overcame a mighty comeback attempt to beat Fiji 23-13 on Thursday and open a four-point cushion ahead of Australia. After an injury-ridden campaign, there was yet more concern for Wales, though, as star No. 10 Dan Biggar limped off late to cast even further doubt over the depth of Gatland’s squad. Later on Thursday evening, France dusted off the challenge of a brave Canadian team to extend their 100 percent start to the World Cup with a 41-18 win in Milton Keynes. Read...

Pool B has proved itself to be arguably the most dramatic grouping of teams at the Rugby World Cup 2015, with a landscape that could be interpreted as a lower-profile Pool of Death in its own right. And that’s by no small part thanks to a host of stars performing outside their means, from Japan’s shock defeat of South Africa in Week 1 to Scotland’s surprisingly confident performances throughout the contest so far. In the last instalment of our surprise player breakdown, here we highlight which players have succeeded most in dazzling despite perhaps not being expected to do so...

France go in search of a third straight win in Pool D of the Rugby World Cup 2015 tonight against a Canada side still wondering what might have been following their glorious defeat to Italy. Victory for Les Bleus would make them the first side in the competition to reach three wins from three and keep them firmly on course for what looks set to be a pool-clinching clash with Ireland in the final round of fixtures. They have not looked dazzling in their preceding games, but, in equal measure, they have never been threatened, nor had to find top gear to dispose of Romania or Italy. On the Maple...

Wales’ historic pool-stage win over England last Saturday went a long way to upsetting the Rugby World Cup 2015 script, and Stuart Lancaster’s hosts now face the possibility to failing to make the quarter-finals. That result has had a big hand in altering this week’s power rankings, where Scotland are among the biggest climbers while would-be dark horses Japan have fallen back down the international pecking order. As ever, these rankings differ from World Rugby’s official list in that form is the most critical factor, but so too are things such as the quality of opposition...

A short turnaround for Wales will see a patched-up side take on Fiji in the Rugby World Cup 2015 on Thursday, with the Islanders still searching for their first win of the tournament. World Cup history between these two includes a major upset sprung by the Fijians in Nantes, France, in 2007 when they came from behind in a harum-scarum contest. It ended 38-34 to Fiji, sending them through to the quarter-finals and sending Wales home, where coach Gareth Jenkins promptly lost his job. There are four survivors in the Welsh squad from that boiling day—Gethin Jenkins, Mike Phillips, Alun-Wyn Jones...

Tonga recorded their first World Cup win of 2015 with a 32-21 victory over Namibia. The Pacific Islanders also recorded a bonus point to move third in the pool with New Zealand and Argentina still to play. Namibia went down swinging, scoring more tries in a World Cup game than they ever have before, and impressed their country’s most successful sportsman, Frankie Fredericks, who was watching from the Sandy Park stands. For the Africans, that elusive victory must now come against Georgia if they are to secure it this time round. For Tonga, tougher tests await. Here are your winners and losers...

A five-try blitz saw Tonga claim their first Rugby World Cup 2015 victory on Tuesday after they defeated African underdogs Namibia with a convincing 35-21 display. Jack Ram and Telusa Veainu notched two tries apiece to dazzle as Tonga talismans, but head coach Mana Otai’s side are still waiting for a player to score their first-ever World Cup hat-trick. Pool C minnows Namibia put up a particularly tough fight in the second period, but the victors enjoyed an obvious advantage in the technical aspect and never really had to get out of second gear. The World Cup will take another...
