Scotland came within one minute of being the only European team to make this year’s Rugby World Cup semi-final lineup, but an 80th-minute Bernard Foley penalty saw Australia to a 35-34 victory at Twickenham. Sunday’s result means not a single northern hemisphere team has made the final four of the competition for the first time in its history, with the Wallabies now poised to meet Argentina next Sunday. The London audience was treated to an end-to-end encounter of the most dramatic variety, where for a brief spell, it looked as though Vern Cotter’s side would complete their earth-shattering...

Peter Horne went over to help the Scots to an early lead, but Michael Hooper, Drew Mitchell and Adam Ashley-Cooper all scored tries in the first half to narrow the gap to one point. A second from Mitchell and a try from Tevita Kuridrani put the Australians in a strong position, but Tommy Seymour and a late touch down from Mark Bennett...

Argentina beat Ireland 43-20 to set up a semi-final against the winners of Australia vs. Scotland. Ireland were missing key players and could not match the Pumas’ intensity. As a result, their defence wilted. Argentina coach Daniel Hourcade has had two years at the helm, and his vision has made the Pumas a potent offensive threat. Always thinking, he made a couple of risky calls against Ireland but was thoroughly vindicated. Ireland’s loss means the northern hemisphere is relying on an almighty upset from the Scots to have any representatives in the last four of Rugby World Cup...

The Pumas rampaged into a 17-0 lead early on, with Matias Moroni and Imhoff crossing the whitewash. However, Ireland staged a second-half rally and got back to within three points thanks to tries from substitute Luke Fitzgerald and Jordi Murphy. New Zealand devastated France 62-13 on Saturday evening as Steve Hansen’s side ran in no fewer than nine tries to demolish their opponents and set up a semi-final tie opposite South Africa. Julian Savea was elected man of the match for his hat-trick of tries, but the star performance spread far and wide, with the All Blacks beating their previous best of points put past Les Bleus. The result means the Philippe Saint-Andre era comes to a most underwhelming close for France, and if ever there were a time to start afresh, this would most certainly seem like it.
