Just over a fortnight remains until Europe’s big guns contend for continental supremacy once again, and the Six Nations brings international rugby back into the spotlight. This year’s tournament could well prove to be the most open yet as France and England enter the fray with new head coaches Guy Noves and Eddie Jones, respectively, while reigning champion Ireland are a weakened outfit. After four Southern-Hemisphere teams made up the 2015 Rugby World Cup semi-finals, this is a much-needed opportunity for Europe’s bastions to showcase their talent, but no clear path is apparent...

Eddie Jones named his first England squad on Wednesday with some big omissions from his 33-man party. Jones was right to exclude Tom Wood from the Elite Player Squad for consistently average performances, and it was correct to leave out the one-dimensional Brad Barritt. Jones, moreover, mistakenly left out the form scrum-half in England, one of its finest props and three others who seemingly perfectly fit the bill of Jones’ exciting brand of rugby. Here are those five Jones was wrong to omit from his England squad. Begin Slideshow Read More →

There was no hanging about for Eddie Jones. The Australian, now in charge of England, swung the axe hard and fast on some of the key figures of the Stuart Lancaster era as he announced his first squad. The selection, described by the Guardian’s Robert Kitson as spilling “enough blood to make even Quentin Tarantino wince,” saw seven new names added to the party and a third of the World Cup squad nowhere to be seen. Geoff Parling, Tom Wood and Tom Youngs—two of them 2013 Lions Test starters—are out. As is the man so often acclaimed as the team’s defensive...

Saracens’ winning run was brought to an end on Saturday at the hands of Harlequins. The chasing pack is closing up on the English champions, but will the side’s misfortune see them slip from the summit of our ranking of Europe’s top 15 club rugby teams? A number of French clubs caught up on their European Rugby Champions Cup commitments, with Toulon, Clermont Auvergne and Stade Francais all recording wins to boost their hopes of a quarter-final place. Oyonnax did not fare so well, succumbing to the comeback of the season so far against Ulster. In the Pro12, Leinster continue their...

A weekend cocktail of league and European action saw plenty at stake as we plough on through the January mud and rain. This week’s collection of collisions brings us some borderline challenges, a big hit from a bulldozer who has been away too long and, to top the lot, a bone-shuddering bump-off that shows why it might not always be a good idea for a scrum-half to try to take down a No. 8 travelling at full tilt. Munster’s exit from the Champions Cup was confirmed on Saturday after they suffered a 27-7 defeat to 14-man Stade Francais, who dazzled in the second half of their clash despite a one-man disadvantage. The Paris outfit were one of several Top 14 sides in fine form this weekend, as Clermont Auvergne defeated Bordeaux to move to the summit of Pool 2 and Toulon improved their Pool 5 standing with a tight win over Bath. Time is running out for those European stars hoping to make a last-ditch run into their national team squad ahead of the Six Nations, and Manu Tuilagi has but a month to impress England coach Eddie Jones. The Champions Cup also made its way back into the continental spotlight, and while some outfits have already sealed their place in the next phase of the competition, others took their leave of the competition.
