It was the traditional rugby powers that stood out on Day 1 of the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship in New Zealand. Strong performances from Australia and South Africa saw them put on the most impressive displays of the day, while New Zealand, England, Wales and France all showed their potential too. Australia got the tournament under way, with a convincing 36-17 win over Argentina. They built their game off a dominant tight five, who pushed around the typically strong Argentinian scrum. It was this dominance that allowed them to maintain possession and launch a handful of attacking moves. However,...

It was a weekend of curtain calls in the Northern Hemisphere as Saturday saw Northampton Saints, Leinster and Toulon crowned as champions of the Aviva Premiership, Pro 12 and Top 14, respectively. The European trio overcame some mighty opposition in their season finales, and the entertainment on show was only further enhanced by the quality of the collisions on display. It’s of little surprise that Saints’ Courtney Lawes was back up to his old tricks against Saracens, using that considerable frame of his to land a particularly devastating blow on Charlie Hodgson, while team-mate George...

The Barbarians romped to a 39-29 victory over England at Twickenham on Sunday as the star-studded Baa-Baas put an inexperienced English side to the sword. It was England that started the match stronger, though, with the Barbarians seemingly unable to handle their free-flowing attacking rugby going forward. Such was the brilliance of their play, it didn’t take long for the hosts to register on the scoreboard, with Dave Ewers crossing the line after 11 minutes. Henry Slade added the conversion to give England a 7-0 lead, but their opening score only resulted in waking...

Here’s one of the best try-saving tackles you’ll see this season. Force wing Nick Cummins ran nearly the entire length of the pitch to catch the Crusaders’ Johnny McNicholl. Not a bad effort from the man they call Honey Badger. Unfortunately for Cummins, his tackle had little impact on the match itself, as the Crusaders would go on to win 30-7. Toulon gave Jonny Wilkinson the perfect retirement present by getting their revenge on Castres for last year’s Top 14 final loss, beating their rivals, 18-10, on Saturday in Paris to claim the French title. Toulon dominated possession early and took the lead through a Wilkinson penalty after eight minutes. This fan has the Vine: The lead wouldn’t last long, however, as Castres turned their very first chance into a try through Maxwell Evans, after Rory Kockott seemed to have knocked the ball forward. Toulon kept pushing forward and held the ball for the majority of the first half, but...

Leinster claimed a second consecutive RaboDirect Pro12 title on Saturday, beating Glasgow Warriors, 34-12, in Dublin to end their campaign on a stellar high. The two sides went into half-time separated by just two points, but the pressure ultimately told for Glasgow as they were made to look amateur at times in the closing phases of what was shaping up to be a commendable and stubborn defence. The RDS Arena played as setting to a to a wonderful send-off for retiring figures Brian O’Driscoll and Leo Cullen, discussed as part of the lessons learned from an entertaining clash in the Irish capital. BBC Sport congratulated the club on their very first Premiership title: Alex Waller scored the winning try with just one minute left on the clock, giving the lead back to his club for the final time. Northampton’s Ben Foden appeared very excited to start the final: Both teams seemed very nervous during the early proceedings, with the ball firmly entrenched in the centre of the park. Neither Saracens or Saints were willing to take too...

It was always going to be a tight war of the Premiership’s most potent powers, but Northampton Saints’ Twickenham triumph over Saracens overcame any and all expectations in a most frantic but fantastic finale. The score was tied at 14-14 after normal time, but Jim Mallinder’s men rode the storm to emerge as 24-20 victors after 20 extra minutes. Saracens will be desperately disappointed to have come away from a second major final defeat in the space of a week, but a last-minute Alex Waller try decided matters in a thrilling back-and-forth fixture, with some of the game’s...
