England suffered an agonising one-point defeat, as they lost 28-27 to New Zealand in Dunedin on Saturday. In the “House of Pain,” it was not the usual tortuous heavy defeat that did the damage but the tantalising proximity to an English victory. England had led the All Blacks 10-6 at half-time, but a second-half surge from the Kiwis meant that the late English fightback was ultimately in vain. With the three-match series now irretrievable, Stuart Lancaster’s attention will be firmly fixed on avoiding a whitewash in Hamilton on Saturday. Certainly captain Chris Robshaw understands...

Ireland made history last weekend by claiming their first Test series victory in Argentina, with Joe Schmidt undoubtedly taking many positives from the excursion. The reigning Six Nations champions took a 29-17 win from their first fixture against the Pumas before making it back-to-back triumphs on Saturday, coming from behind to win 23-17 at the Estadio Jose Fierro. However, such a tour would be pointless were there not a sample of errors that raise the need for improvement, and Schmidt will take lessons both good and bad away from his trip to South America. A fast start and a strong performance up front saw England beat a depleted Crusaders side 38-7 in their only midweek game of their 2014 New Zealand tour. The Crusaders were without their All Blacks and their inexperience showed, as England’s physicality and intensity was clearly a step up from what many of the Crusaders had played before. You could not fault the effort or the commitment of the Crusaders, who threw themselves at the English all night. They dropped too much ball however and found themselves going backwards too often to get any real attack going. While they were enterprising...

Julian Savea often leaves spectators bemused at how one so terrifyingly athletic can still be just 23 years of age, but the New Zealand wing once again shone this weekend as the All Blacks edged out a 28-27 victory over England. Numerous members of Stuart Lancaster’s squad felt the full force of the Hurricanes brute, but it was Marland Yarde who was dealt the most embarrassing blow by “The Bus.” That was just the tip of the iceberg in this week’s international flurry. Ireland’s Rhys Ruddock also managed to leave a very physical dent on Argentina, while Chris Wyles...

The second weekend of the international window saw all the big guns in action and some fine individual performances. Only Ireland managed to topple one of the big four from the Southern Hemisphere but it is from the fixtures between New Zealand and England, Australia and France and South Africa and Wales where some world-class displays form this week’s team. England and South Africa have booked their places in the Junior Rugby World Championships final of 2014, winning what were two contrasting semi-finals. The early game saw England dispatch an Ireland team—who looked out of their depth—by 42-15, while South Africa needed a last gasp try to snatch a seven-point victory from a hungry New Zealand team. It was a completely dominant first half that saw England put away an Ireland team that just could not get their game going. England’s powerful forward pack was aggressive and constantly provided their team with front-foot ball....

England were thrashed against New Zealand. Forget the 28-27 scoreline, England were thrashed. After a good first-half performance which saw England lead 10-6 at the break, a combination of English tiredness and Kiwi brilliance saw the All Blacks run in three tries in 22 second-half minutes. The first half was played at an extraordinary tempo, but England were able to live with the All Blacks during a frenetic opening 40 minutes. However, the seeds were sown then for the New Zealand onslaught that arrived after the break. England expended huge amounts of energy to keep the patient All Blacks at...

Ireland struggled to outlast a game Argentina squad, eventually scrapping their way to a 23-17 win. The Irish touring team was something of a letdown in the first half. There was very little pace and imagination on display. By contrast, Argentina carefully followed a plan based on countering with speed. It was a simple formula that produced the game’s first try. Joaquin Tuculet bolted his way over: But his score hardly awoke Ireland from their slumbers. Their play continued to lack focus, while the pace was modest at best. That left the Irish surprisingly trailing their South American hosts...

South Africa dismantled Wales in their first Test meeting. The Springbok were rampant from the start, eventually cruising to a 38-16 victory. The win was a homage to the pace and power South Africa attacked with from the opening whistle. They simply fired into every scum, and once they found space, the South Africans bolted through gaps. Wales simply couldn’t cope with the speed of play. Their resistance was broken early by the coltish Bryan Habana. His first try was captured brilliantly on the Sky Sports Rugby Twitter account: Habana‘s run set the pattern for a first half demolition...

Streakers will probably think twice before doing this at a rugby game again. During a rugby game between the New Zealand All Blacks and England, a streaker decided to run onto the field. Security quickly responded, and one guard absolutely leveled him. (Warning: The video below features material that is NSFW.) The All Blacks won a close one, taking the 28-27 victory.
