Andrew Sheridan: rugby player, bench-presser, brick-layer, folk singer and Eddie Munster-lookalike, has been facing challenges throughout his career. But, the 40-cap England prop retired from all rugby Tuesday after admitting defeat against the long-standing injuries that have decimated his career. With better luck, he would have doubled that tally. At 6’5” and 19 stone, 9 pounds, Sheridan was very tall for a prop forward. In fact, Sheridan began his career at the back of the scrum. Andy Robinson, who as England coach gave Sheridan his first England cap in 2004 told the Bristol Post of Sheridan’s...

With the European Champions Cup just three weeks from lift–off, the major players in Europe are still having a mixed bag of it as the season progresses. In England and France, the leading sides are on a collision course for an October 17 clash between Saracens and Clermont Auvergne. With both topping their respective tables and looking like strong contenders for top honours, it is a shame that Saracens haven’t shifted their opening group fixture against the French powerhouse to Wembley, where they would surely attract a bumper crowd. While these two and other big hitters either side...

Argentina were the latest team to fall victim to the mauling magnificence of Julian Savea on Saturday as the New Zealand winger let his rampant side run loose against the Pumas. In a weekend of Rugby Championship, ITM Cup and Currie Cup action, the All Blacks star accounts for this week’s only entry in our biggest hits from the southern hemisphere—the rest coming courtesy of Europe’s bastions. However, it is worth pointing out that players from south of the equator still made some impact. Matt Luamanu of Treviso and Uini Atonio of La Rochelle landed some huge blows in the...

The 2015 Rugby World Cup, hosted by England, is under a year away, and the first round for applying for tickets for the tournament closes Monday. Rugby is a sport with a decent track record at promoting its expansion, but the International Rugby Board (IRB) and the English Rugby Football Union (RFU) have missed a trick with the venues chosen because the majority of matches will be played in the capital and the south. The tournament is far too London-centric. Eight of the World Cup’s premier matches will be played at England Rugby’s headquarters, Twickenham. While this great stadium...

New Zealand secured the Rugby Championship with a bonus point-win, 34-13, over the Pumas in La Plata, per ESPNScrum.com It was more workmanlike than wondrous from Steve Hansen’s men, which, barring that display in Auckland against the Wallabies, sums up their tournament. Sobering, then, for everyone else, that a New Zealand team not at its dazzling best have wrapped this title up before the last weekend. Still, there were some eye-catching performances from the men in black. Here are the winners and losers. Begin Slideshow Read More →

South Africa rode through a wave of Australian pressure to emerge from Newlands with a bonus-point victory over the Wallabies on Saturday, winning 28-10 in front of a home support. The victory takes Heyneke Meyer’s side to within one point of table leaders New Zealand, who face Argentina on Saturday evening hoping to take their fourth win of the tournament. The winning margin was particularly astounding when one considers the Springboks were 10-8 down with 11 minutes to go, scoring three tries in the final nine minutes to turn around their fortunes with barely any time remaining.
