South Africa ended the Rugby Championship without the silverware but something they craved even more: The All Blacks’ scalp is sitting on their mantelpiece after a titanic struggle at Ellis Park. This was the rugby equivalent of Hagler vs. Hearns, except these two threw bombs at each other for 80 minutes, not three. In the end, Heyneke Meyer’s men had to win this game twice. The Springboks have the long–range boot of replacement fly–half Pat Lambie to thank, who nailed a 50-metre penalty with a minute left to wrench back a game that looked as though it had been...

South Africa beat New Zealand 27-25 in a marvellous clash at Ellis Park in the Rugby Championship. The result was confirmed here by the Springbok’s official Twitter account: Pat Lambie slotted a last-gasp penalty to win this one, but the star of the show was South Africa’s young fly-half Handre Pollard, who produced a magnificent multi-faceted display for the Springboks. He scored two tries, notched two conversions and penalty for good measure. Francois Hougaard scored the first try of the day for the hosts. Tries from Malakai Fekitoa, Ben Smith and Dan Coles were ultimately...

In what has to be one of the most bizarre moments in any sporting event, anywhere this year, a university rugby match in England was interrupted when a streaker ran onto the pitch, tackled a player with the ball, and sparked an all-out brawl. The incident happened during the match between Newcastle and Northumbria with the brave (yet foolish) soul entering the pitch just as Newcastle were attacking. He seemed to get a few punches swung his way when he was finally tackled but amazingly the players then seemed to forget what they were fighting over and left him be as they continued to rumble on...

The above rugby tackle came in a recent schoolboy match between Australia and the New Zealand Barbarians and will make you squirm. The New Zealand captain Liam Howley was lucky to escape without a broken neck when he was lifted and slammed to the ground by Australia’s Jordan Jackson-Hope in just the second minute of the match. Jackson-Hope looked shocked when he received a red card for the tackle, but replays of his spear tackle, that looked like it belonged more in the WWE than in rugby, showed the referee had no choice. With a man down for the rest of the match,...

Another Rugby Championship has gone by without Argentina managing to claim their maiden victory in the southern hemisphere tournament, but Daniel Hourcade’s men will seek to reverse that rut with the visit of Australia on Saturday. In the final contest of the 2014 competition, the Pumas and Wallabies have nothing to lose from their closing encounter, with New Zealand having already wrapped up their third successive title. However, those terms may yet produce a thrilling encounter in Mendoza, where both sides will have an air of experimentation about them in the search for evolution. Date: Saturday,...

New Zealand have already succeeded in defending their Rugby Championship crown this year, but Saturday’s fixture against South Africa will by no means be a contest lacking in competition. The All Blacks have an unbeaten record to uphold and, after coming away from Ellis Park 12 months ago with victory in tow, Steven Hansen’s men will once again seek to take down the Springboks in their own backyard. Little more than pride is at stake for South Africa, but in front of a home audience, Heyneke Meyer’s men will be eager to display their progress ahead of next year’s Rugby World...

As an up-and-comer in New Zealand rugby, Julian Savea had been billed as the second-coming of Jonah Lomu. Like Lomu, Savea is a big, fast, strong running winger, who caught the public’s imagination at a young age. In reality it is hard to compare players from different eras. The game has just changed so much. But that does not stop us from trying. Current All Black coach, Steve Hansen, is the latest to make such a comparison, suggesting that Savea is a better player than the man many compared him to, as was reported by The New Zealand Herald. That is a big statement, but he does...

The Wallabies arrive in Mendoza following their late collapse against South Africa, looking to end their tournament on a high. They find a Pumas team still searching for that long–awaited first win in the Rugby Championship. With a lengthy journey in their legs and a storm swirling around a mid–flight incident involving Kurtley Beale and a Wallabies staff member that has been followed by Beale’s axing from the squad, per the Sydney Morning Herald, Argentina could be sniffing their moment. Let’s have a look at the key battles. Begin Slideshow Read More →

There may no longer be a title on the line in Saturday’s encounter between South Africa and New Zealand, but that doesn’t quell the rousing competition that these two sides are set to enjoy. The All Blacks retained their Rugby Championship title with victory over Argentina last week and will hope their trip to Ellis Park can end in similar triumph, just as it did 12 months ago. The hosts will attempt to derail their opponents’ momentum in Johannesburg, and with injuries playing their role in the selection stakes, a number of key head-to-heads stand out above all others. All statistics...

It is beginning to look increasingly unlikely Dan Carter will ever make it back to the top of his game. After spending more time sidelined with injury than actually playing in recent years, the All Blacks fly-half has picked up another knock in what was his ITM Cup comeback game in the weekend, as per TVNZ. While it has been suggested that he may indeed play this weekend, it is yet another reminder that Carter is not getting any younger. His body is not standing up to the knocks as it used to and whether he will ever get himself back into condition to add to his 100 tests is starting to look...
