On Saturday, Ben Flower became the dubious owner of a never-been-done-before record: getting sent off in a Super League Grand Final. The Wigan man was shown red after a vicious attack on St Helens‘ Lance Hohaia. (WARNING: The video contains violent material) Flower connected on a wild swing as tempers flared and then continued with another punch when Hohaia appeared to be knocked out on the pitch. The Welshman will likely face a long suspension for the shameful attack. Hohaia later returned to the bench, albeit in a seemingly very groggy state. It wasn’t...

Australia won just two matches in the Rugby Championship, defeating South Africa with a late try at home and narrowly squeaking through against Argentina on the Gold Coast. They battled to a draw at home to New Zealand in sopping-wet conditions and were battered in Auckland, rounding off their campaign with gallant defeat in South Africa and that historic loss to the Pumas in Mendoza. The signs on the field have not been encouraging, while off the field they have also sailed into choppy waters, with player discipline coming under the microscope. Let’s have a look at the fluctuating fortunes...

For a team that lost twice in the Rugby Championship and nearly got turned over twice by the competition’s traditional whipping boys, South Africa emerged surprisingly chipper. That’s what toppling the world champions does for you. The Springboks had a stammering start to this season’s championship with narrow wins home and away to Argentina and then came unstuck against Australia and New Zealand on their travels. But a late comeback that turned into a convincing margin against the Wallabies was then followed by an inspired display against New Zealand. That 27-25 win was packed...

Another successful Rugby Championship title defence and the faces of the New Zealand squad still shared a look of disappointment upon their 27-25 loss at Ellis Park last Saturday, such is the winning desire of an All Black. Steve Hansen’s side nonetheless come out of the tournament with a long list of positives, however, and we analyse several key members of their competition and how their reputations have been affected over the past two months. It’s of little surprise to see that falling stock is almost, if not entirely, absent as far as New Zealand are concerned, but we’ll scrutinise...

There is just one week of domestic argy-bargy remaining before the new European competitions begin, so let’s see who is easing into top gear ahead of the next big phase of the season. The Rugby Championship rounded to its close this weekend, with New Zealand reigning as champions once again despite South Africa’s victory, but the biggest hits reside elsewhere among the global rugby masses. In Europe, the Pro12 endured a difficult weekend of off-the-ball collisions that gave referees a few tough decisions to make. Liam Williams of Scarlets and Dan Biggar of Ospreys were among those to suffer. There were also Pro12 crashes of the completely legal variety, however, and Leinster flanker Dominic Ryan made sure to get one in early during the Boys in Blue’s derby fixture...

The Rugby Championship’s final table might have a familiar look to it, but the last weekend shook the natural order of things up with wins for South Africa over New Zealand and Argentina over the Wallabies. Some displays in this last weekend swung the decision over who should earn a spot in this team of the tournament, while others confirmed their places. This team of the tournament is the result of an assessment of the quality of performances, the context in which some players performed and the number of matches they played compared to their rivals.
