Ouch! The above incident comes from the early stages of Japan’s rugby match against the Maori All Blacks last weekend. Poor Masataka Mikami found himself completely out for the count after clashing heads with team-mate Takeshi Kizu. To make matters worse, Japan would go on to lose the match 61-21. Tough day! Ireland face trial by fire on Saturday, opening up their autumn Test series with the most difficult of their three international fixtures when they play host to South Africa. Joe Schmidt’s first year as head coach of the Six Nations title holders was a highly positive one but now the pressure is on to show marked improvement having had ample time to integrate his plans. Less than a year remains until the 2015 Rugby World Cup gets underway, and South Africa bring the kind of elite examination Ireland can expect to encounter in the competition. We discuss a sample of the key battles that could...

England will be without influential second-rower Joe Launchbury for the 2014 Autumn Internationals, as the Wasps lock needs to recover from a neck injury, per the BBC. But it is the breakdown, not the scrum or line-out, where England will suffer. Securing turnovers has been England’s problem for years. In the 2014 Six Nations, Joe Launchbury’s turnover count (6) was exceptional, which saved the blushes of the English back-row. As per Irish Rugby, only Peter O’Mahony made more (7). Simply put, without Launchbury, England will have a tougher time retaining possession and stealing...

The United States were unable to leave much of a mark on New Zealand as they saw out a 74-6 defeat at the hands of the All Blacks, their loss made all the worse by the bruises they picked up along the way. And Augustine Pulu achieves top marks in this week’s rundown of rugby’s biggest knocks, introducing the Eagles’ Tom Coolican to exactly what life is like playing against the finest in the sport. That particular hit made up for the international section of this compilation, with the majority of the high-octane collisions coming courtesy of France. Sitting at the top of...

Oh dear Chicago Sun-Times, hang your head in shame. The New Zealand national rugby team played the USA Eagles in front of a sold-out crowd at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday, and despite the one-sided result, it seemed to be a great success. A little bit of ignorance about the sport of rugby could be tolerated from the Americans, maybe even expected, but thinking New Zealand is part of Australia? That’s just poor geography. We expect somebody on the subs’ desk at the Chicago Sun-Times got a stern talking-to after this mess-up. [Twitter: @TalkingRugby ,...

A curious weekend in the fixture calendar saw domestic competition return in Europe, while Australia and New Zealand circled the globe before the autumn internationals take centre stage next week. Australia warmed up with an entertaining clash against the Barbarians at Twickenham, while the All Blacks took the rugby gospel to Chicago, and delivered it with a sound beating of the USA Eagles. While the big players of the home nations rested easy ahead of the international window, the big hitters in France had no such downtime. All played in another round of Top 14 fixtures, with some notable...

It was a case of too skilful, too clinical and simply too good as the All Blacks beat the USA 74-6 in their historic match at Soldier Field in Chicago. The on-field result was to be expected, but the off-field result is one of huge value to the sport of rugby, promoting the game in front of a crowd of 61,500 to help grow the game in what could be a huge market. The difference in ability between the world champions and the minnows was evident from the get-go. They were two teams of completely different levels. While the USA did not lack for effort, they could not cope with the speed the All Blacks...

New Zealand emerged victorious at Chicago’s Soldier Field on Saturday, beating the United States 74-6 in a fixture that never looked as though it would produce an upset. North American audiences rarely get the opportunity to witness teams of New Zealand’s quality firsthand, and what a master class it was as Steve Hansen’s concoction of first-stringers and hopeful contenders ran rampant. Read on for a breakdown of the biggest winners and losers to come from this result, with players, teams and even an entire world of sport benefiting from a superb Test exhibition. New Zealand rounded off a rare trip to America with a 74-6 demolition of their United States hosts on Saturday, getting their autumn international series off to a booming start at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Steve Hansen fielded a mixed line-up of experience and youth for the celebrated Test trip, a result which eclipsed the average of their previous meetings with the Eagles, per OptaJonny: The All Blacks took their time in getting up to full speed, and in the early exchanges, the United States looked as though they may be putting up a fight, registering their only points inside the first 17...

The 2015 Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham is exactly a year away. My prediction is for an England–New Zealand final. This is based on how the draw will pan out and England’s home advantage. England, at home, should beat Wales and probably Australia in the tough Pool A. Being in the hardest group has distinct advantages for the team who tops it, with the reward of a favourable knockout draw. Should England top the Pool, they are likely to face either Scotland or Samoa in the quarter-final, with a semi-final likely to be against France, Ireland or Argentina. Then there is home advantage...
