England and South Africa have clashed 36 times, per ESPNScrum.com, with the Springboks leading the way with 22 wins to England’s 12. You have to go back eight years for the last time England lowered South Africa’s colours, which underlines the size of the task facing Stuart Lancaster’s men this weekend. They must look to some memorable days in their dim and distant past for successes against their next opponent. Just don’t mention the World Cup. Begin Slideshow Read More →

The giants of the southern hemisphere continued their trials north of the equator this past weekend, with the likes of New Zealand, South Africa and Australia each playing to differing outcomes. Although the autumn series officially began last week, many would count this as the official beginning of the tourists’ Tests, and each made a point of letting their European hosts know exactly what hit them. This is evidenced by the fact that any highlight hits included from this weekend’s internationals all come courtesy of the visiting outfits, with South Africa accounting for top spot despite...

The BBC have apologised after they listed Wales rugby star Jake Ball as “Jake Ballsack” on their official website ahead of Saturday’s clash with Australia. The error was highlighted by Ball’s team-mate, Jamie Roberts, and he seems to have found it much funnier than the bigwigs at the Beeb. A BBC spokesperson told Wales Online: “We are investigating how this error occurred and the piece was amended as soon as it was spotted. We apologise for any offence that may have been caused.” There is a rogue BBC reporter out there who just might be getting...

The autumn internationals are underway, with the big guns from down south winning two and losing two, while France crushed Fiji, and Italy got past Samoa. We saw some fine moments of individual brilliance and some superb defensive displays, with plenty of points scored across the weekend. Ireland put up a number of candidates for a deeply impressive win over South Africa, while New Zealand’s and Australia’s big names performed with distinction. England suffered some familiar failings against the All Blacks, as did Wales in defeat to the Wallabies, but they still had some outstanding...

New Zealand recorded a fourth straight win over England this calendar year, sending Stuart Lancaster and his men home frustrated. England did a lot right, beginning the game with all the initiative but some costly errors meant they couldn’t capitalise on their dominance in that opening period. New Zealand made them pay and now march on, with England needing to recover quickly in time for the physical challenge South Africa will bring next week. Here are the winners and losers. The 2014 Autumn Internationals got off to a thrilling start under the roof at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, with Australia edging Wales 33-28. It was a familiar story for Wales, who were unable to break their Southern Hemisphere hoodoo that has seen them win just once against the big three in seven years. With Wales playing Australia in Pool A of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, it was a deflating defeat for the home side and a positive competitive start for new Wallaby coach Michael Cheika. Ireland produced a magnificent display to secure a famous 29-15 victory over South Africa in Dublin. The result was confirmed by the South African Rugby Twitter account: Tries from Rhys Ruddock and Tommy Bowe plus a 16-point haul from the boot of Jonathan Sexton did the business for the home side, who showcased magnificent fortitude in securing this victory. South Africa were frustrated for long periods by a ferocious Irish defensive effort, and while they scored a tries through Marcell Coetzee and JP Peterson, this performance didn’t possess much of the patented Springbok swagger. Scotland defeated Argentina 41-31 at home on the back of an excellent first half, as the hosts dominated the match for 70 minutes, allowing several late tries that made the score look a lot closer than it really was. The hosts had a nightmare start to the match, after Jonny Gray played a terrible pass to Greig Laidlaw. The scrum-half got laid out, and Javier Ortega Desio picked up the loose ball and returned it all the way across the pitch for the opening try. Scotland soon found themselves on level terms, however, Richie Gray playing a beautiful dummy to fool Manuel Montero before sliding over...

The result was confirmed by the England Rugby Twitter account: Tries from Aaron Cruden, Richie McCaw and Charlie Faumuina plus a further nine points from the boots of Cruden and Beauden Barrett did the business for New Zealand. England started the match in scintillating style with an early try from Jonny May. While they added another nine points courtesy of Owen Farrell’s kicking and a late penalty try, they were unable to contain a rampant All Blacks...
