Former Liverpool defender Rigobert Song has been hospitalised in his home country of Cameroon after suffering a stroke on Sunday that has left him in critical condition and “fighting for his life.” That’s according to Joe Rimmer of the Liverpool Echo, who reported the 40-year-old had a brain aneurysm. L’Equipe (h/t Ian Holyman of ESPN FC) added that he “fell ill at his home in the Cameroonian capital Yaounde” and was subsequently taken to hospital. On Tuesday, he came out of his coma and will be flying to France to be transferred for more treatment, via BBC Sport. Song...

A member of the United States men’s national team experienced two rarities on Saturday, one of which is an unfortunate sign for his prospects of making the next 23-man roster. Fulham center-back Tim Ream started for just the third time this season, against Queens Park Rangers, but he made the most of it, as he struck the back of the net. The forwards in the USMNT talent pool were also active in front of the net, including Jozy Altidore, who can’t be stopped at the moment for Toronto FC. We’ll have news on those stories and more below in our latest USMNT Watch. ...

Spain manager Julen Lopetegui has left Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas and Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin out of his squad for the team’s upcoming international fixtures. The 23 players for the matches against Italy and Albania were confirmed via the team’s official Twitter feed on Friday, with no space for Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta or Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata either: When quizzed about Fabregas’ omission, Lopetegui stated “we like a lot of players, and they can’t all play,” per ESPN FC. Although Fabregas has long been a...

It has not been a good week for the Football Association after it was forced to let Sam Allardyce go as England manager and allegations were made about widespread corruption in the game it governs and safeguards. But the governing body has been left further embarrassed after motivational postcards signed by the now-former England boss Allardyce were received by Three Lions players on Thursday, two days after the manager left his post. The message on the cards read: “Our Journey Has Begun,” a cruel irony for Allardyce given that his England journey ended after just 67 days when...

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate has reportedly told Manchester United star Wayne Rooney he will remain the captain of the Three Lions under his watch, according to the Daily Mirror‘s John Cross. Cross wrote that Southgate called Rooney on Thursday to let him know he will captain the team in the four upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The captain’s armband likely means Rooney will keep his spot in the starting XI as well, despite his poor start to the 2016-17 Premier League campaign. Per Cross, Rooney got in touch with Southgate earlier in the week to offer...

There was something distinctly Shakespearean to Sam Allardyce‘s very swift demise as England manager. It was a job he coveted for so long, yet his inherent instincts, his toxic intuition, betrayed him. It was like he couldn‘t stop himself, unable to stem his urges like so many William Shakespeare protagonists. This was a tragedy for the modern football age. But regardless of whether Allardyce‘s exit as the national-team manager was the right course of action or not, English football must now plot a way forward from this nadir. It’s only 10 weeks since the last search resulted...

Tracey Crouch, the minister of sport, has responded to the Telegraph‘s investigation into corruption in football, demanding a full inquiry and offering the assistance of the British government. Ben Rumsby of the Daily Telegraph shared the response to the newspaper’s investigation: The League Managers Association also reacted to the news, per BBC Sport’s Matthew Henry and Michael Emons: “We take the allegations very seriously, as they are obviously damaging to the game. We are in regular communication with the FA to establish the facts relating to those...

Sam Allardyce reportedly wants to return to football again following his departure as England manager and bemoaned the “entrapment” that saw him caught up in a newspaper sting. The 61-year-old left the England post on Tuesday, after just one match in charge following the release of footage by the Telegraph showing Allardyce telling undercover reporters that it was “not a problem” to circumvent FA rules on outlawed third-party ownership. According to the Daily Mail‘s Matt Lawton and Charles Sale, despite the ignominious circumstances of his departure,...

Gareth Southgate has been appointed interim England manager on Tuesday following Sam Allardyce’s resignation. The FA relayed the news that Southgate would replace Allardyce after his abrupt exit due to a Telegraph sting. Most pressingly, Southgate, 46, has very little time to select his England squad for two upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Set to be Allardyce’s second and third games in charge as England boss—following his opening 1-0 victory over Slovakia—the Three Lions face Malta at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 8 and Slovenia in Ljubljana three...

Sam Allardyce resigned as England manager Tuesday after just one match in charge following a sting carried out by the Telegraph. The FA announced the news of the 61-year-old’s dismissal: Allardyce’s conduct, as reported today, was inappropriate of the England manager. He accepts he made a significant error of judgement and has apologised. However, due to the serious nature of his actions, The FA and Allardyce have mutually agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect. This is not a decision that was taken lightly but The FA’s priority is to protect...
