Chelsea‘s Diego Costa, Arsenal‘s Hector Bellerin and Manchester United‘s Juan Mata are among a number of notable absentees from Vicente del Bosque’s provisional 25-man Spain squad for the 2016 European Championship this summer. Atletico Madrid‘s Fernando Torres has also missed out. AS shared the squad on Tuesday, which saw Atletico’s Saul Niguez and Real Madrid forward Lucas Vazquez rewarded for their form this season with places in the squad: Mata played no part in Spain’s first six qualifiers, but after appearing in each...

It was all going so smoothly…too smoothly, if anything. Leading up to the week of Roy Hodgson’s squad announcement, England’s preparation for UEFA Euro 2016 could hardly have been any better. Ten wins from 10 in the qualification group—the only nation to do so—a remarkable 3-2 comeback victory in Berlin against Germany and a subtle inference that Wayne Rooney may not start at the tournament itself had buoyed the public’s spirit and heightened optimism heading into May. But then disaster struck. As is often the way just before a major international tournament—and...

Manager Marc Wilmots confirmed 24 players on Thursday, a figure that’ll be cut to 23 before the tournament begins. Here’s the list, per the team’s official Twitter feed: Origi has been sidelined since mid-April with an ankle injury picked up in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Everton. Vermaelen is a veteran of the Belgium national team but has started only six games for Barcelona in La Liga this season. The most notable omission...

Brazil will attempt to win this year’s Copa America without Kaka and Oscar after manager Dunga left the attacking-midfield pair out of his squad. There was also no place for Paris Saint-Germain central defensive pairing Thiago Silva and David Luiz. CBF Futebol (h/t Sports Illustrated) provided the full 23-man squad for this summer’s tournament: Dunga was already dealing with star striker Neymar’s absence from the Copa to play at the Rio 2016 Olympics instead, so ditching Oscar and Kaka may have surprised many. The Brazil chief has still included a host of familiar faces, including...

Martino said the following, per Grounds: I always felt that it would be an exaggeration to have Leo play...
