For those watching at home, this was somewhat inevitable. As Brazil sleepwalked their way towards a goalless draw with Ecuador in their Copa America opener on Saturday evening, all that was wrong with Dunga and his side was laid bare. Yes, this Ecuador team is in form and sits joint top of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying group. They are well disciplined and tactically organised, but surely Brazil, despite six changes to their squad in the build-up to this fixture, would be able to cope comfortably? It would appear that the public are no longer so sure, that the five-time world champions can...

UEFA Euro 2016 hosts France continued to warm up for the tournament nicely with a 3-0 friendly win over Scotland on Saturday at Stade Saint-Symphorien. Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud scored twice, while fellow Gunners star Laurent Koscielny grabbed another in a clinical first-half display from Les Bleus. Didier Deschamps’ men started their final preparations for this summer’s tournament by beating Cameroon 3-2 in Nantes on Monday. And although their opponents in Longeville-les-Metz were not as testing as Les Lions Indomptable, the French still remedied their problems from...

Germany won their second and final warm-up match before UEFA Euro 2016 on Saturday, beating Hungary 2-0 at Veltins–Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. In many ways, it was a typical pre-tournament friendly against a lowly opponent that never looked to pose a threat to the current World Cup holders. As so often is the case, the match fizzled out once both teams started to make substitutions in the second half. Players coming on for 30-odd minutes during such a game have their work cut out for them if they’re to impress the head coach and work their way into the starting XI. Still,...

Colombia’s Copa America chances suffered a big blow on Friday, as star man James Rodriguez picked up a nasty-looking shoulder injury. The Real Madrid man fell awkwardly in the second half of Colombia’s 2-0 victory over USA and now faces a battle for fitness. Continue for updates. Colombia Optimistic of Rodriguez Return Saturday, June 4 Although James Rodriguez didn’t exactly set the world alight for Real Madrid over the course of 2015/16, the way he performed in Colombia’s Copa America opener showed he still has plenty to offer. The midfielder was a constant...

Argentina face Chile on Monday evening in a match fit for a final and a repeat of last year’s Copa America decider. The Albiceleste recovered some of their lost pride following that 2015 shootout defeat with a 2-1 World Cup qualifier win, but the wounds are still fresh, and much more is on the line than three Group D points. Gerardo Martino and Juan Antonio Pizzi’s charges proved on that occasion and last year that the two teams are evenly matched, with little to choose between the pair. The fate of the Copa opener in Santa Clara, California, will come down to fine margins,...

Mexico and Uruguay will not be able to gently dip their toes in the Copa America Centenario water. The two nations are instead jumping right in at the deep end, as they face each other on Sunday in an intriguing battle between the heavyweights in Group C. Juan Carlos Osorio’s perfect record as coach of El Tri will be tested at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. However, with striker Luis Suarez likely missing from Uruguay’s side due to a right hamstring injury and Mexico unbeaten since last year’s Copa in Chile, Osorio’s squad go into the tournament...

Brazil will open their 2016 Copa America campaign on Saturday when they meet Ecuador in a Group B game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Meanwhile, Paraguay will face Costa Rica in an intriguing match in Group A. LOS ANGELES — Fingers can justifiably be pointed at Brazil coach Dunga for many reasons, and frequently are, but this summer it seems like circumstances are conspiring against him, too. Despite his best efforts to change the situation, the CBF (Brazilian football federation) were involved in a Mexican standoff with Barcelona over Neymar’s availability for the Copa America Centenario and the Olympic Games, which they eventually lost. Dunga wanted the country’s star player to feature in both, Barcelona insisted it could only be one. Brazil could call him up for the Copa and there...

Thursday’s 1-0 defeat to England at Wembley might have ended in miserable fashion for the visiting Portuguese thanks to Chris Smalling’s late winner, but it would have given coach Fernando Santos plenty of food for thought ahead of the Euro 2016 finals. With the final week of preparations now coming into view, Santos will look to use Wednesday’s friendly against Estonia in Lisbon as the final chance to put plans into place for his assault on Group F. Iceland, Austria and Hungary are opponents in France for a Portuguese side seemingly travelling with very little expectation, and...

The previous week, Marcus Rashford became the youngest-ever player to score on his England debut with his goal against Australia at the Stadium of Light. At the age of only 18 years and 208 days, Rashford had quickly made himself indispensable to an England squad already brimming with youthful talent. While England celebrated the arrival of another young hero, it was perfectly understandable that the television cameraman immediately sought out the reaction of that symbol of the old order, Wayne Rooney, who was sitting on the bench. If they were expecting a frown, they would have been disappointed...
