Germany’s first two matches of their Euro 2016 campaign have followed a familiar script: Much like in the four previous major tournaments under head coach Joachim Low, the team followed up a fairly convincing win in the opening game with a somewhat underwhelming second performance. Having beaten Ukraine 2-0 and drawn 0-0 with Poland, “they’re top of the table, of course, but none the wiser about their chances to win the competition,” as Raphael Honigstein wrote for ESPN FC. As in those previous tournaments, critics are openly wondering how good this Germany side...

Hosts France have made a solid, if unspectacular, start to the 2016 UEFA European Championship, and Didier Deschamps’ men will close out Group A against Switzerland at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille on Sunday. While boasting six points from a possible six is obviously a big plus, the truth is that Les Bleus are yet to really impress on home soil this summer. Now that the pressure is off and a place in the latter stages of their own tournament is already guaranteed, the French could finally start to express themselves against a vulnerable Swiss outfit in northern France. Deschamps made a few...

It’s only ever been them who could play like this. The question was whether they still had this in them. That question has now been answered. On Friday night, Euro 2016 was treated to its most dazzling performance thus far as Spain cruised past Turkey, 3-0, at the Stade de Nice, playing like this—with artistry and devastation, with joy and genius, as only they can. For a night, Spain channeled that Spain, and opponents everywhere know what that means. Manager Vicente del Bosque described the performance as “perfect” in his post-match press conference. AS called...

When the full-time whistle blew in Seattle on Thursday night, Jurgen Klinsmann breathed a sigh of relief. The majority of the nearly 50,000 fans in attendance did too, with the United States through to the Copa America Centenario semi-finals after beating Ecuador 2-1. The Copa hosts reached the semis of the tournament for the first time since 1995 on the strength of the encounter, which was particularly enthralling after both sides were reduced to 10 men when Jermaine Jones and Antonio Valencia were dismissed. They are now eagerly awaiting Saturday’s clash between Argentina and Venezuela...

Rare is it that even-handed characters prove so divisive. To poll the general public in England as to whether Roy Hodgson is doing a good job or a bad one in France would be to toss a coin in the air. Just as there is no such thing as a three-sided coin, it seems there is precious little room for grey in the black-and-white world of the England manager. He can’t be doing fine. It’s either good or bad. Boos or cheers. Just ask Raheem Sterling. I’d definitely donate to a JustGiving page fundraising to send to France (or preferably Switzerland, one way) anyone who donated to a JustGiving...

Italy came into their Euro 2016 game against Sweden knowing that it would be a different test than the one they passed against Belgium in Group E on Monday. The Belgians and their high-octane attack were going to look to play on the front foot, allowing holes for the Italians to play through a makeshift defensive line that was missing three players due to injury. The Swedes, on the other hand, weren’t going to press as far up. The Italians were going to have to do the one thing they are weakest at in this tournament—break down an opposing defence in possession. Much of...

Hosts France are the only team at the 2016 UEFA European Championship to have won two matches so far. With six points, four goals scored and only one conceded, things are going well—on paper at least—for Didier Deschamps’ men. After almost two full years without a competitive fixture, it was imperative that Les Bleus readjusted after nearly 24 months of uninspiring friendly action. The players have done just that. Even if the French are yet to truly impress on home soil, they are winning. At this stage, that is all that should matter, and that is all that will have counted in...

Former Brazil international Rivelino has criticised Selecao captain Neymar, blasting the lifestyle and attitude of the Barcelona player. After the team’s exit from the Copa America Centenario recently, Neymar reacted angrily to criticism of the efforts of the team, posting on his Instagram there is a “whole lot of people talking s–t,“ per Aaron Torres of Fox Sports. He later apologised for the comments, as noted by Sport. Rivelino was asked about the Barcelona man, who was not involved in the Copa with a view to being sharp for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and...

Cristiano Ronaldo cut a frustrated figure after Portugal’s 1-1 draw with Iceland on Tuesday, not only blasting the team for their celebrations but also reportedly saying “who are you?” to Aron Gunnarsson when he asked to swap shirts with him. According to German outlet Bild (h/t Sport), “after he was twice ignored in the changing rooms,” Ronaldo told captain Gunnarsson: “Swap shirts? Who are you?” However, Gunnarsson has denied the report, per Goal.com: He said “inside” [the tunnel], there was no problem. He wasn’t asking who...

A flustered England fan has set up a fundraising page to raise money to bring Raheem Sterling back from the 2016 UEFA European Championship. The Manchester City man has been a long way short of his best at the tournament and was hauled off at half-time as the Three Lions came from behind to beat Wales 2-1 on Thursday. It was enough to prompt one supporter, Aaron Bamford, into taking matters into his own hands. “Let’s face it, we’re all sick of seeing this idiot mince down the wing and fail to deliver a half-decent ball into the box,” read part of the accompanying...
