Antoine Griezmann clinched the Euro 2016 Golden Boot on Sunday and finished as the tournament’s top scorer, after Portugal beat hosts France 1-0 in the final thanks to an extra-time winner from Eder. The Atletico Madrid forward finished with six goals to his name, at least three goals more than any other player in the competition. Griezmann’s tally was the highest number of goals a player has scored at the UEFA European Championship since Michel Platini netted nine at Euro 1984. Griezmann came into Sunday’s final having scored five in his last three appearances...

Why Euro 2016 Final Could See Nani Emerge from Cristiano Ronaldo’s Shadow

Published: July 9, 2016

Even if all the previews will focus on one individual for Portugal, they had a pair of players who scored two crucial goals in the group stages and one in the semi-finals against Wales. Although all of the Portuguese buildup to the Euro 2016 final is focusing on Cristiano Ronaldo, remember to make room for Nani. Largely impressive at this tournament, the winger, now at the ripe old age of 29—where has the time gone?—has had a strange sort of career and one that seems to have been tainted by association. He’s never going to be the first name on your lips when you’re...

Euro 2016 a Missed Opportunity, but Germany Need Joachim Low to Stay on

At the end of Euro 2016, there was a distinct emptiness in the German camp. The 2-0 semi-final defeat at the hands of host nation France was hard to grasp, because it felt so avoidable, so out of character in the way silly mistakes doomed the world champions, who were arguably the better team on the balance of the 90 minutes. Head coach Joachim Low told the media in the press room of Marseille’s Stade Velodrome that his side did nothing wrong, per Gabriele Marcotti of ESPN FC. “I have to compliment my players. We were the better team. It was just bad luck that we conceded. We still...

3 France Weaknesses Portugal Could Expose in the Euro 2016 Final

Now they’ve made it to Paris, albeit hardly thrillingly, Portugal need to focus on how they can pull off what would be one of the more unlikely European Championship successes on Sunday. The odds will be heavily stacked in favour of hosts France, who have certainly impressed during their month of performing in front of their own fans, but they—and Portugal, for that matter—have had a fairly kind route to their nation’s capital and were somewhat fortunate to beat Germany in their semi-final on Thursday. That means some of their weaknesses haven’t been exposed in this...

Lionel Messi’s Potential Argentina Return Discussed by President Mauricio Macri

Argentina President Mauricio Macri doesn’t expect Lionel Messi to follow through with his international retirement, having insisted he is “sure” the Barcelona man will play for his country again. In the aftermath of the Albiceleste’s loss to Chile on penalties in the final of the Copa America Centenario, Messi stated that he would be walking away from international football. However, Macri revealed at a conference in Idaho that he has spoken to the 29-year-old about the decision. “I talked to him on the phone; I’m sure he will come back,” he said, per Adam...

Uncharacteristic Errors Doom Germany in Euro 2016 Semi-Final vs. France

Published: July 8, 2016

Germany’s dream of becoming only the third to team to hold the World Cup and the Coupe Henri-Delaunay at the same time came to an abrupt end on Thursday night in Marseille‘s Stade Velodrome. The 2-0 defeat at the hands of host nation France in the semi-final of Euro 2016 was hard to grasp, for it felt so unnecessary. One would be hard-pressed to find someone who believes Les Bleus were the better side in the match. The world champions dictated the run of play for much of the 90 minutes but lacked that little bit of decisiveness going forward and some concentration at the back. That’s...

France are into the 2016 UEFA European Championship final after a 2-0 win over Germany at Stade Velodrome on Thursday. The world champions dominated the hosts possession-wise, but ultimately Les Bleus took their chances in clinical fashion and Joachim Low’s men did not. The two-time winners will now have the chance to earn their third title in the competition and it will be their third out of four international crowns won on home soil if they are successful. Antoine Griezmann struck twice for the French against Die Mannschaft to book their berth at Stade de France against Portugal on Sunday,...

Are Portugal Really the European Championships’ Worst-Ever Finalists?

Published: July 8, 2016

It became apparent rather early that Euro 2016 was prime for an outsider to make a charge. It took until the latter rounds for any side to impose themselves on the competition, with the newly expanded format giving the tournament a distinctly open field. Bets were taken and tips made on which of the 24 teams in France this summer would emerge from the pack to go the distance. Much of the group stage was spent searching the field looking for the next Greece, as has become the conventional term for a side pulling off a shock in international football. Portugal might not have been the most obvious...
