Former Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko was appointed as the national team’s manager on Friday. The Football Federation of Ukraine’s official website confirmed the move, which sees the 39-year-old take over from former boss Mykhaylo Fomenko. Sky Sports News HQ and the UEFA Euro 2016 Twitter feed also noted the appointment: Shevchenko is best remembered for his time with AC Milan, his goals helping the team to one Serie A title in 2004 and the UEFA Champions League the year before. Prior to his move to Italy, he won five league titles with Dynamo Kiev. After leaving Milan...

After four years at the helm, Marc Wilmots was sacked as Belgium manager on Friday. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) announced the move on its official website, terminating a contract that was set to last through 2018. Belgium were considered Euro 2016 favourites by many but were eliminated in the quarterfinals by an exciting Wales side. The RBFA had the following to say regarding the decision to part ways with the 47-year-old and the impending search for a new head coach: The RBFA’s Technical Commission have made an evaluation of the recent UEFA Euro 2016...

There are two groups of people who seem opposed to the prospect of Sam Allardyce as England manager. There is the collective of aesthetes, the purists and the traditionalists, those who believe a national team is somehow representative of the nation and should offer a template of free-flowing, sensuous football. And then there are Sunderland fans, who recognise what a blow losing Allardyce would be. The job Allardyce did at the Stadium of Light last season was remarkable. He arrived eight games into the campaign with the club on three points and drifting badly. Summer recruitment had been poor,...

Fans have voted Zoltan Gera‘s opening goal in Hungary’s 3-3 draw against Portugal during the UEFA Euro 2016 group stage as the Goal of the Tournament. UEFA confirmed the news on their official website, revealing Gera beat out the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri of Switzerland and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal with his superb volley from distance. Here’s a look at the strike, via Carlsberg: The 37-year-old scored his stunner after 19 minutes—the first of six goals in what was arguably Euro 2016’s best match. Not everyone agreed with the popular vote, however. Shaqiri’s...

With the 2016 UEFA European Championship now over, beaten finalists France can turn their attention towards the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Les Bleus qualified automatically for this summer’s tournament as hosts and will need to advance from Group A, which features the Netherlands, Sweden, Bulgaria, Belarus and Luxembourg, if they want to go to eastern Europe in two years’ time. As far as qualifying groups go, this one should not be too difficult to navigate. The Dutch failed to qualify for Euro 2016, while Sweden—who left France without a single player scoring a goal—are...

The red and green ticker tape has long since been picked up from the grass of the Stade de France and the streets of Lisbon, and so what now for Portugal? Well, in short, rest. Whatever your opinion of this Portugal team and their performances in winning Euro 2016, you can’t deny that the effort they put into winning the tournament means Fernando Santos’ men deserve a well-earned break over the next few weeks. From Real Madrid to Southampton to Lille, whichever clubs these players belong to can’t expect to see them back quickly, and nor should they. Santos deserves a bit...

Joachim Low will stay on as Germany head coach for at least two more years, the German Football Association (DFB) announced on their official website on Tuesday. The 56-year-old said in a statement: “We had the youngest team at the tournament, and I still see huge potential. I am confident that they will still provide us with plenty of joy, and so I’m just as excited as ever to carry on working with these players and continue developing them with the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in mind.” It’s a swift resolution to one of the biggest questions left after Euro 2016....

Although they were beaten in the final by Portugal at Stade de France last Sunday, France’s 2016 UEFA European Championship campaign should be considered a success. Pre-tournament, Didier Deschamps’ men were looking to better their quarter-final appearance at the World Cup in Brazil two years ago and they did that. Not only did Les Bleus go one step further than the last eight, they went two better by reaching the final. On paper and based on the form shown by both sides in France this summer, the Henri Delaunay trophy appeared the hosts’ to lose. However, things were not as straightforward...

The party was well and truly under way in Lisbon on Monday, even prompting some of Portugal’s Euro 2016 heroes to show off their musical sides. Fernando Santos’ side won their first major tournament with a 1-0 extra-time victory over host nation France on Sunday night and returned to Portugal as national heroes. Among the chaos, Nani and Renato Sanches stole the show with a beatbox performance: And then Cristiano Ronaldo took over the microphone: It’s the biggest party in the world right now—and don’t expect it to end anytime soon. As he waited to be interviewed by the host broadcaster in the Stade de France tunnel after Portugal’s historic Euro 2016 win, Cristiano Ronaldo craned his neck forward and stared into the camera. “How do I look?” he asked, tightening his cheeks and exposing that famous, gleaming grin. “Shiny,” came the reply from behind the camera. Ronaldo raised his eyebrows and laughed. It was a strange night for Portugal’s captain in Saint-Denis—a night in which lots of the cliches about him were confirmed, and a host of others were consigned to the rubbish bin. Yes,...
