Germany have named Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer as their new national football team captain following the retirement of Bastian Schweinsteiger. The decision was announced on the team’s official Twitter feed on Thursday: Schweinsteiger played his final match for Germany in a friendly against Finland on Wednesday evening. Neuer now takes over the role having accrued plenty of international experience, representing the national side on 71 occasions. As OptaFranz noted, he’s only the second goalkeeper in the history of German football to be bestowed with such an honour: The...

Belgium coach Thierry Henry is to reportedly donate his annual salary of around €50,000 (£42,350) from his new role. That’s according to Sport/Foot Magazine (h/t Mark Rodden of ESPN FC), who noted the gesture is motivated by the fact the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward feels privileged to be working with the Belgium team, who are second in the FIFA world rankings. In addition, Henry, who was appointed to manager Roberto Martinez’s coaching staff last week, is continuing his work with Sky Sports as a pundit and earning a healthy amount. According to Rodden, he’ll...

While his frumpy, simplistic style might not make him terribly progressive, Sam Allardyce was appointed as England manager to take the team forward. After all, they couldn’t fall any further following their dismal Euro 2016 showing. Yet the new national team boss is seemingly set on looking backward before plotting the course ahead. English football desperately needs a new crop of talent to freshen up what has become a distinctly stale team, yet Allardyce recently revealed he is considering handing John Terry a recall. That’s the same Terry who last played for England four years...

Brazil forward Neymar will step down as the national team captain after leading his side to football gold at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The Barcelona star scored the winning penalty in a shootout victory against Germany on Saturday at the Maracana Stadium, much to the delight of the home crowd. In the aftermath, Neymar expressed his intention to let someone else lead the team going forward. “Today I have become a champion, and I give up the captain’s armband,” the 24-year-old told SporTV (via Soccerway, h/t ESPN FC). “It was an honour to be captain, but...

Saturday was a terrific night in Major League Soccer for the United States men’s national team contingent. The performance that stuck out the most came from Jozy Altidore, who is working his way back to full fitness for Toronto FC. If he keeps up his current scoring form, the 26-year-old should be a key fixture in the USMNT‘s September CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. Outside of MLS, only a few Americans had successful weekends, but none of them thrived as much as the group of players plying their respective trades in North America. Neymar had started Brazil’s march towards Olympic gold in the Maracana, and the Barcelona man was also there to finally end their quest. The inspirational forward led his young team-mates by example to add the final penalty to his early free-kick and finally break Germany’s brave resistance, as the Selecao prevailed in scenes of unrestrained joy in Rio de Janeiro. It was never an easy ride for the Selecao, under overwhelming pressure to win the last gong missing from the nation’s bulging trophy cabinet. Brazil had finished three times as silver medallists at the Olympic...

With every medal hung round the neck of a British athlete in Rio de Janeiro, another entry is surely scrawled into the grand catalogue of notes the Football Association must be taking this summer. Team GB’s astonishing Olympic success comes directly on the back of another dismal showing by England at a major tournament, so why is one team flourishing while the other is floundering? That is the case study. Indeed, the contrast between Great Britain’s glittering success in Brazil this summer—Team GB currently sits second in the medal standings—and England’s exit to...
