The season’s second major (not to mention a glorious summer of golf) is nearly upon us. Difficult, almost sinister Oakmont Country Club will play host to the U.S. Open for the ninth time and the first since Angel Cabrera’s victory in 2007. And, whaddya know, the Big Three—Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy—lead the list of favorites, with the likes of Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose and Adam Scott following closely behind, per Odds Shark. As both casual and more, well, invested golf fans begin to consider who will raise the trophy at Henry Fownes’ Pittsburgh-area...

A decade ago, Phil Mickelson made ripples among his brethren for suggesting that the PGA Tour was no place for a democracy to take root. Instead, he espoused the benevolent dictator model, wherein one man is entrusted with the autonomy and authority to mete out punishment, manipulate policy and enforce the rules. Or, in fact, do nothing at all. “I don’t think players should be involved in the tour,” Mickelson told the San Francisco Chronicle’s Ron Kroichick in 2006. “I think the commissioner should run the tour.” Now we know why. Two full seasons after an...

Following William McGirt’s surprise victory at the Memorial Tournament, the first of his career, the PGA Tour heads south to Memphis, Tennessee, and TPC Southwind for the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and company are due to face a tricky par-70 layout, which PGATour.com’s fantasy expert, Rob Bolton, describes as a “second shot golf course,” writing: …it’s arguably best received as one of the most consistent tests. TPC Southwind put up its usual fight with a scoring average of 70.933 in 2015. For successful intents and purposes,...

William McGirt took home his first trophy on the PGA Tour in the third playoff in the last three years at the Memorial Tournament. With a resolute effort amid an hour-and-a-half stoppage in play and two-hole playoff with Jon Curran, McGirt was steady from start to finish en-route to a final-round 71.
