The 2016 U.S. Open’s opening round was cut short by heavy rain on Thursday at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. Two separate weather delays preceded the torrential downpour that halted play for the day at 3:51 p.m. ET. Among the players who did tee it up, unheralded American Andrew Landry was atop the leaderboard at three under par: Landry began his championship on the back nine and has a birdie putt at his 18th hole, the par-four ninth, for a round of 66. He’s hit 10 of 14 fairways and 13 of 18 greens in regulation. Luke Elvy of CBS highlighted the stakes at play for...

The 2016 U.S. Open is going to be a tough test at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, so players had to be somewhat thankful for the rain that fell during Thursday’s opening round. Although Mother Nature brought about a stoppage in the action twice, the softer conditions made it easier to score at a venue that last hosted the championship in 2007 and yielded a winning score of five over par. When play was suspended for a second time at 12:07 p.m. ET, Andrew Landry was five under through 13 holes, giving him an early three-shot advantage. Scores are bound to balloon over the next three...

Danny Willett overcame a star-studded field to kick off golf’s major season with a victory in the Masters back in April. Now Oakmont Country Club is hosting the game’s best for what should be an outstanding test of both physical and mental strength at the 2016 U.S. Open. Oakmont represents a difficult test because of its small margin for error. The course magnifies even minor mistakes, which is why the champion is often the player who can best limit the damage when he does get in trouble, as Angel Cabrera proved with his plus-five winning score nine years ago. Let’s take an early...

While the Masters is the first major tournament of the year and much is made of the pristine beauty of Augusta National and its near-perfect golfing conditions, there is no tournament that tests golfers like the U.S. Open. While there are still several months to go in the golf season, the U.S. Open is in many ways a final exam because the course is set up in such a difficult manner. The course is nearly always designed to punish golfers who don’t keep the ball in the fairway and can test even the best putters because the greens are as slick and fast as they are at any point during...

The week might not feature the best scores, but the 2016 U.S. Open will at least be entertaining.
