Winner: Dustin Johnson (-4) Dustin Johnson conquered Oakmont Country Club with a fantastic fourth round on Sunday in the midst of controversy. The American used a terrific approach shot on the 18th hole to set up a winning birdie putt that moved his score up to five under. He was docked a shot after the round for an incident on the fifth hole. Johnson was in the middle of a brewing storm for most of the back nine as the USGA officials approached him on the 12th tee box about a review of his putt back on the fifth green in which the ball moved as he was in the process of addressing the...

If the golfing gods are kind at the U.S. Open Sunday, either Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia or Lee Westwood will finally feel the relief that comes from having a 400-pound gorilla climb off one’s back. There are dozens of players in the field who have never claimed one of golf’s biggest prizes, but it’s those three who have had to live the longest with hearing the dreaded phrase, “Best player to never win a major.” Aside from that blank spot on their resumes and the ability to play world-class golf, they don’t have much in common. Johnson, the 6’4”...

In an era of hot takes and social media, using terms like “greatest ever” has all the impact and permanence of a 140-character tweet. As in, 20 minutes later, it’s been buried and forgotten with the swipe of a finger. Yet, as utterly unheralded Andrew Landry continues to impress with his play at the U.S. Open this week, “biggest” and “greatest” are not merely throwaway terms designed to attract eyeballs for a few nanoseconds. While it sounds hyperbolic, a victory by the unknown, feisty Texan on Sunday would rank as the greatest upset in a century of U.S....

With numerous players vying for position atop the 2016 U.S. Open leaderboard at Oakmont Country Club, there is no clear favorite heading into Sunday. What will remain the same is the purse, which stands at $10 million. The winner will receive the same $1.8 million that Jordan Spieth received in 2015, per GolfandCourse.com. Shane Lowry seized control of the lead at five under par overall before darkness suspended play in Round 3, while Andrew Landry was two strokes behind. Here’s a look at the leaderboard after Saturday’s play: Here are the projected prizes for the top 10 based on last...

Shane Lowry is in the lead at the 2016 U.S. Open after Saturday’s marathon session that saw players finish their second rounds early and start their third rounds late in the afternoon. Of the players who wound up making the cut, 37 were unable to finish the third round before darkness set in and forced play to be suspended, so there will be another full day of action at Oakmont to determine who will walk away with the year’s second major championship. Here’s the leaderboard after everyone went into the clubhouse Saturday: At five under par overall, Lowry is the...

Nothing has come easy at the 2016 U.S. Open. Stormy weather washed away most of Thursday’s play, forcing the tournament to adopt a relentless schedule on Friday and Saturday in order to get in the final round before the end of the weekend. The famous Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, was already going to be an exceedingly difficult test, even without players getting thrown off schedule and knocked out of rhythm. The rain did soften up the notoriously fast greens at Oakmont, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the course from snuffing out some of the sports’ biggest...

Defending champion Jordan Spieth‘s struggles continued Saturday at the U.S. Open, as he shot a second-round two-over 72 to go with an even third round 70, which leaves him at four over for the tournament. Spieth entered the clubhouse at Oakmont Country Club in a tie for 27th, nine strokes behind the leader. Here is a look at the top of the leaderboard: The two-time major winner settled for a disappointing two-over 72 in his rain-interrupted opening round, and he was unable to make measurable gains during the second or third round, as evidenced by his up-and-down scorecard: Spieth...

Rory McIlroy hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since last year’s Wells Fargo Championship, and his bid to add another marquee victory to his resume at the 2016 U.S. Open fell well short. McIlroy followed up an opening-round 77 with a one-over 71 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania to miss the cut by a single stoke, as noted by Independent Sport. He actually looked primed to make a charge during the early portion of his second round Saturday. He started on the back nine and birdied four of his first seven holes to climb the leaderboard. Alas, from that point forward, he had two double...

Rory McIlroy had a lot of work to do after shooting a seven-over 77 during his first round, which stretched from Thursday to Friday. On Saturday, an early charge to make the cut took a turn for the worse when he recorded a one-over to put him at eight over for the tournament. At the time of his finish, he was two strokes below the cut line and all but eliminated early from a major for the first time since the 2013 British Open, per ESPN’s Bob Harig. Starting his day on the back nine, McIlroy quickly surpassed his first-round total of one birdie Saturday. Through his first seven...

Give Dustin Johnson plenty of credit for intestinal fortitude. After the disastrous finish at Chambers Bay last year, he could have come into this year’s U.S. Open quaking in his golf shoes and hoping he wouldn’t fall apart again. But there was no fear in any part of Johnson’s game Friday, as he played 36 holes and shot four under par in the two rounds to move into a tie for first place. With a strong showing on Saturday, he may be able to put his stamp on this tournament. But before he tees off Saturday afternoon, half the field will play its second round Saturday morning. That...
