Emiliano Grillo didn’t wait long to secure a breakthrough win in the 2015-16 season. Grillo, a Web.com Tour grad, captured the first event on the PGA Tour calendar, the (then-called) Frys.com Open. A week later, Justin Thomas, who mounted a stellar rookie campaign during the 2013-14 season, took home the trophy at the CIMB Classic for his breakthrough win. In other words, breakthrough wins came early in the 2015-16 season. And if the recent past has set a precedent, we’ll see more emerging talents raising trophies soon. In looking at eight PGA Tour golfers poised for breakthrough...

Swedish star Alex Noren chalked up his third European Tour victory of the season at the British Masters on Sunday, as he held off the challenge of Bernd Wiesberger on a dramatic final day at the Grove in Chandlers Cross, Hertfordshire. Noren came into the final day of action three shots clear at the top of the field, and despite a topsy-turvy day, a two-under 69 was enough for him to seal the title on 18 under par and take home a cheque for £500,000. The 34-year-old, who finished on 18 under for the tournament, won the Scottish Open in July and September’s European Masters, adding...

Sweden’s Alex Noren will take a three-shot lead into the final day of the 2016 British Masters after he shot a faultless 65 to move to 16 under par at The Grove, Hertfordshire, England, on Saturday. Friday’s overnight leader, England’s Richard Bland, birdied the last hole to card a two-under round of 69 and move into second place on his own on 13 under. Meanwhile, tied in third place on 12 under are Noren’s compatriot, Peter Hanson, Austrian Bernd Wiesberger, Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and South Africa’s Richard Sterne. Here is how the leaderboard looks...

Richard Bland stormed to the top of the leaderboard at the 2016 British Masters on Friday, posting a score of 11-under par at the halfway point. The Englishman caught fire after the turn, picking up six birdies on the back nine. One earlier on the second gave him an unblemished card and a 64, the lowest round of the day. Alex Noren and Andrew Johnston are a further shot back after fine rounds on Day 2. The duo both shot 65 to move to the summit of the leaderboard for much of the day before Bland’s tremendous late run. A fascinating weekend looks to be in store at the British Masters,...

Four men share the lead after the first day of the 2016 British Masters, with Mikko Ilonen, Marc Warren, Tommy Fleetwood and Richard Sterne all playing rounds of five-under 66 on Thursday. The course at Chandlers’ Cross, Hertfordshire, England, played fairly quickly and gave plenty of the top stars on the European Tour problems, and the top 10 is filled with Englishmen who know the course well and used their local knowledge. Several top players, including Danny Willett, have already dropped out of the tournament, so fans could be in for a shock winner after four days of action. Here’s...

U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson was voted the 2016 PGA Tour Player of the Year by his fellow golfers following a voting process that concluded Friday. The PGA Tour announced the result, which was based on ballots from players who made at least 15 tour starts during the 2015-16 season, on Tuesday. PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem released a statement of praise as part of the announcement: On behalf of the PGA Tour, my congratulations to Dustin Johnson for his outstanding play on big stages during the 2015-16 season. His hard work on the golf course and in the gym paid off with the finest...

Fire up the joke of your choosing about the conclusion of the 2015-2016 PGA Tour season three weeks ago and the start of the 2016-2017 season this week: The Safeway Open is here. The artist formerly known as the Frys.com Open was supposed to mark the return of Tiger Woods from a 400-day plus layoff. Instead, Woods, who committed to the tournament Friday, backed out Monday, saying his golf game wasn’t exactly ready for its closeup. The sound of flowing water you hear is the collective river of tears shed by tournament organizers, networks, the PGA Tour and golf fans. Nevertheless, the show...

Tiger Woods: PGA Tour grinder. Given a career resume that makes him a mandatory part of chats regarding the game’s all-time greats, even suggesting such a label seems blasphemous. After all, he has 79 tour victories and 14 major championships. The Associated Press deemed him the “Athlete of the Decade” for the first 10 years of the millennium. He’ll be the player today’s 40-somethings tell their grandkids they saw in his prime. But as anyone who got Monday’s bulletin from TigerWoods.com can attest, those days feel long gone. A 199-word missive bearing...

Tiger Woods is withdrawing from the 2016 Safeway Open, announcing the decision in a statement on his website: After a lot of soul searching and honest reflection, I know that I am not yet ready to play on the PGA TOUR or compete in Turkey. My health is good, and I feel strong, but my game is vulnerable and not where it needs to be. When I announced last week I was going to Safeway, I had every intention of playing, or I wouldn’t have committed. I spent a week with the U.S. Ryder Cup Team, an honor and experience that inspired me even more to play. I practiced the last several...

Tyrrell Hatton blazed his way to the 2016 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship crown on Sunday after a fourth-round score of 66 saw him beat joint runners-up Richard Sterne and Ross Fisher by four shots. The Briton finished on 23 under par after four rounds of the tournament, while Sterne and Fisher were tied on 19 under, struggling to keep up with the meteoric pace set by Hatton over the weekend. Hatton set the bar high after he shot a terrific 62 on Saturday, but the 24-year-old managed to sustain that momentum and finish strong at St. Andrews to cap off his European Tour triumph. Hatton’s...
